Chapter 1819

What’s the meaning of this? (4)

ROTMHS Glossary || About page

Gnash.

Staring at the blazing pavilion, Jin Hyeon bit his lower lip hard enough to draw blood. His eyes were bloodshot, and the tip of his sword trembled.

He no longer cried out that they must run to Wudang.

β€œSasuk….”

β€œYes.”

It was clear. Who set that place on fire. Who committed that horrifying act.

The flames rising simultaneously from multiple pavilions made everything clear.

When he turned his gaze, his eyes met Mu Jin’s. From Mu Jin’s only remaining eye, bloody tears were flowing.

Mu Jin also knew. What was happening there.

β€œSajil.”

Instead of answering, Jin Hyeon slowly closed his eyes. It felt as if his chest were being torn apart. He wanted to run there right this moment. But he couldn’t. Because doing so would be an insult to those who had set these pavilions on fire.

These burning pavilions were clearly conveying it.

β€œSasuk.”

β€œβ€¦β€¦Yes.”

β€œThe Sect Leader… says we must not look back.”

Blood seeped from Jin Hyeon’s lower lip, where his teeth had dug in.

β€œHe says not to look behind, but to look ahead.”

β€œβ€¦Yes. I heard it too.”

Jin Hyeon stared once more at the burning Wudang, as though engraving the scene into his eyes for all eternity. Without a single blink, he watched it, then suddenly turned around.

β€œI’m sorry for my childish outburst. First…”

Crunch.

Jin Hyeon ground his teeth harshly.

β€œLet’s do what we must.”

Mu Jin slowly closed his eyes.

β€˜Sect Leader…. Sasuk.’

Even without seeing, he could tell. He felt it without needing to confirm. Who was risking their life in that place, and what that fire was trying to convey to everyone here.

β€œYes.”

Mu Jin answered briefly, unable to utter anything more. He had no confidence in hiding the tremor in his voice.

β€˜Just believe.’

Believe that they will be safe.

Leave what happens behind to those guarding the rear. Right now, they must face the enemy before them and fight.

β€œDo not look back!”

Mu Jin shouted until his throat felt raw. Every disciple of Wudang standing here would hear him clearly.

β€œThat place is not Wudang! Neither the burning pavilions nor the land we lived on can ever be called Wudang!”

Even Mu Jin, who was shouting, did not believe his own words. But the one who stands at the front must sometimes shout the words he himself does not believe. He understood that now.

β€œWhere we stand is Wudang. This place is Wudang. Show them! What Wudang truly is! Show them why we are Wudang!”

The eyes of Wudang’s swordsmen grew red. A strange cry burst from their throats, half wail, half battle cry.

Behind them, their home was burning. Even so, they could not run there. Where should they unleash this resentment and rage?

The answer was all too simple. The ones who had caused all of this stood right before them.

β€œUaaaaaaah!”

Paying no heed to their own lives, the swordsmen of Wudang began swinging their swords at the enemy.

❀ ❀ ❀

Jang Ilso’s gaze had been fixed on a single spot for a while now. It was as though he had turned to stone.

Ho Gamyeong realized that even Jang Ilso had never anticipated this outcome.

Was it a fatal misstep?

That can’t be. Every move Jang Ilso made was nearly perfect. No one could have predicted and countered all of them.

But what was the result?

Jang Ilso’s prediction that the enemy wouldn’t foresee this situation turned out to be correct. Their reaction proved it.

However, the prediction that they wouldn’t be able to respond missed the mark. They somehow managed to counter every move.

Gradually, it was becoming suffocating.

Normally, the side that devises the plan has a far greater advantage than the side that defends. But for these desperate measures thrown in the midst of such chaos to all be blocked – could that even be possible?

He felt a surge of anger rising from his gut.

But lamenting in a situation like this is useless. There is only one thing that matters now.

β€œβ€¦.Ryeonju.”

Ho Gamyeong looked at Jang Ilso, who stood as rigid as a statue.

Did Jang Ilso still have a move left to overcome all of this?

β€œHmm.”

At last, Jang Ilso let out a short groan. As if blood were returning to a lifeless stone, his body trembled slightly.

Letting out a long sigh, Jang Ilso spoke.

β€œThis is boring.”

β€œβ€¦β€

β€œIsn’t it strange?”

β€œRyeonju.”

Jang Ilso’s dissatisfied gaze swept over the battlefield.

β€œLook. It’s a complete mess.”

Ho Gamyeong gritted his teeth in silence.

Strictly speaking, calling it a complete mess isn’t quite appropriate. In fact, the problem is that it’s all too neat and straightforward.

The battlefield was completely different from what they had envisioned. That much was perfectly clear.

The one they sent out to seize the initiative ended up losing his life to mere novices, and the sword they went to such trouble to draw was bound hand and foot.

Even their most trusted β€˜dogs’ failed to break through the enemy’s defenses. The battlefield should have descended into a whirlwind of chaos by now, yet it still hadn’t gone beyond mere skirmishing.

If this continues, the outcome of the battle is obvious.

β€œIsn’t it strange? So very strange. And yet… somehow… it feels familiar.”

Jang Ilso, muttering to himself, let his gaze sink deeper. Ho Gamyeong’s expression grew rigid.

β€˜Familiar.’

It felt as if that word stabbed him in the core. Indeed, Ho Gamyeong, too, was sensing the same deja vu.

The carefully laid plan was thwarted so easily, as though the enemy had anticipated it in advance and made their preparations accordingly.

From Sapaeryeon’s perspective, this turn of events was unsettling, yet strangely, it also felt like something they had already experienced. Ho Gamyeong knew why.

β€œMaehwa Geomgwi…….”

β€œThat’s right, isn’t it? But that’s why it’s strange.”

Jang Ilso spoke in a voice somewhat lower than usual.

β€œLook. He’s right over there.”

Jang Ilso lifted his hand. His white, slender fingers, previously hidden by the sleeve of his crimson robe, came into view. His half-lowered index finger pointed to a single spot. Standing there was Chung Myung.

β€œHe’s right there.”

β€œβ€¦β€

β€œOf course, that idiot from Diancang did something foolish… but I’d expected that much from the start. Just tying down that Taoist bastard and sealing his lips was enough for him to serve his purpose. So as long as he was still bound to one place, everything should have been going exactly as I intended.”

Jang Ilso did not overestimate himself.

He was confident in his strategies, but he never believed they were all-powerful. After all, a strategy is nothing more than the desperate struggle of someone who lacks the strength to fight head-on.

And on the opposing side stands someone who can render even that struggle meaningless.

Hwasan Geomhyeop, Chung Myung.

It’s not merely because he’s outstanding. It’s because he’s so profoundly different yet disturbingly similar to Jang Ilso – enough that each can see through the other’s moves.

There was only one way to make a strategy succeed against someone like that: grab his focus and attack where his gaze could not reach.

That was how Jang Ilso brought down Shaolin and eradicated Paeng Family. How he drove Kongtong to a state beyond recovery, and even wiped out nearly a half of Wudang.

It should have been no different here. As long as Chung Myung’s movements were restrained, Jang Ilso’s plan should have worked. And yet…

β€œAt this rate… it’s as if there were multiple damn Taoists, isn’t it?”

Jang Ilso licked his lips as he spoke. His voice was calm, but his expression had twisted into something resembling that of a demon’s.

β€œThough that shouldn’t be possible.”

Ho Gamyeong, who had been listening silently, shut his eyes tight without realizing it.

He’d always felt a day like this would come. One day, those brats from Hwasan would grow to be just like that man. And when that day came, there would be no place left in the world for Sapaeryeon. Ho Gamyeong’s intense wariness and obsession with Maehwa Geomgwi stemmed from that fear.

And now, that gnawing premonition is becoming reality right here. Sooner than he had imagined, and on a scale larger than he had ever expected.

β€œRyeonju.”

β€œThis is why the world is interesting. Don’t you think so, Gamyeong-ah?”

Jang Ilso tilted his head back as he spoke. His eyes were on Ho Gamyeong.

Ho Gamyeong bit his lip over and over. It was truly impressive that he could remain so calm even in this situation, but was that really how Jang Ilso felt inside? Perhaps he was desperately masking his urgent anxiety with a facade of composure.

β€œAt this rate, we’ll lose.”

β€œHmm.”

Jang Ilso stared intently at Ho Gamyeong, then replied firmly.

β€œNo. That won’t happen.”

β€œβ€¦Ryeonju?”

β€œWhen do we lose? When do we truly lose in this battle?”

β€œβ€¦β€

β€œNo. You know as well as I do – when it is that we truly lose.”

Ho Gamyeong looked at Jang Ilso in silence. Jang Ilso did not miss the faint tremor in Ho Gamyeong’s usually steady, cold eyes.

Jang Ilso’s eyes curved like a crescent moon.

β€œSo… shall we try one more move?”

He directed a gaze, that was surprisingly gentle, towards Ho Gamyeong.

❀ ❀ ❀

Chung Myung exhaled deeply and slowly turned his head. The moment he did, his gaze met the eyes of the person who had been waiting for him.

A steadfast look. Since when had those eyes taken on such a glow?

His body must have already reached its limit. No, perhaps it had already crumbled. Yet the spirit contained in that body was terrifyingly clear*.

β€œSeriously… there’s no stopping you, is there.”

Chung Myung, who had been staring intently at the person before him, finally shook his head. Then he spoke sharply.

β€œYou’ve already died ten times over. You know that?”

β€œWho knows.”

The voice that returned was gentle.

β€œThe only certain thing is that I’m not dead and still alive. Isn’t that enough?”

Looking at Baek Cheon, who offered a faint smile, Chung Myung pressed his tightly closed lips together. To be honest, he wanted to plant his fist onto this smiling face.

Chung Myung tightened the grip on his sword.

β€œI’ve got a lot to say, but… let’s talk after the war is over. Stay behind me if you want to live.”

He deliberately spoke more coldly and turned away.

Protecting Baek Cheon, who was in such terrible shape, wouldn’t be easy. But there was no better option right now. And Chung Myung knew Baek Cheon wasn’t someone who would just back down quietly.

But then, an unexpectedly firm voice pierced Chung Myung’s ears.

β€œNo.”

Chung Myung, who was in the middle of turning away, stopped. Then he turned back with a look of disbelief.

β€œThat’s your job, Chung Myung-ah.”

β€œβ€¦What?”

Baek Cheon’s expression was calm. The moment Chung Myung saw the quiet conviction in his eyes, his face froze. A bad feeling flashed through his mind.

β€œSasuk?”

β€œYou lead them and fight.”

A voice, calm and without the slightest tremor, continued.

β€œI’ll do what I have to do.”

β€œWhat kind of idiotic…!”

β€œOnly after all this did I come to realize something.”

When Chung Myung’s eyes filled with confusion, Baek Cheon smiled.

β€œAny struggle is worth it, no matter how meaningless it may seem.”

Chung Myung’s expression hardened.

β€œLeave it to me. I’ll struggle with everything I’ve got. That’s my specialty now.”

Chung Myung looked as though he wanted to kill Baek Cheon with his gaze, but Baek Cheon received that look with a smile.

After glaring at Baek Cheon for a long moment, Chung Myung spat out his words.

β€œDo whatever you want.”

β€œDon’t die.”

Baek Cheon answered curtly, then turned away. That was when Chung Myung shouted from behind.

β€œSasuk!”

β€œHuh?”

β€œβ€¦Take Baek Sang Sasuk with you. He’ll be of help.”

Baek Cheon gave no reply.

He could feel Chung Myung gaze on his back. But this was not the time to turn around. It was the time to convey his resolve.

β€œDon’t worry. I’ll get it done.”

β€œβ€¦β€

Baek Cheon ran forward.

Left behind, Chung Myung watched his retreating figure intently.

It was a back far more shabby than in the past… and yet, strangely, it overlapped with Chung Mun’s.

β€˜That Dongryong…’

Chung Myung, who wasn’t able to look away from that back for a long time, finally managed to turn around and muttered,

β€œMaybe I’ve gotten old.”

It must have been why he suddenly felt like leaning on someone else.

YES! YES, BAEK CHEON! He got through that thick head!! Okay, now things are looking different, it seems to me like Chung Myung is out of that weird mental state thanks to BC.

I wonder what BC could possibly need need to do now… Oh man…

And Biga reeeeeally likes JIS. One more move?? Meh. Also I don’t understand his mood, is he defeated and bored? Or just bored? Idk, I didn’t like that part too much.

And JIS saying everyone is like Chung Myung now (or at least the important ones)… I mean yes, Biga pointed that out in several chapters before this one… But I can’t help but to see them like they’re still far away from Chung Myung. Maybe because every single time we get their perspective on the battle, it seems they’re barely holding on. But apparently from JIS’s perspective, they’re doing just fine LOL… Idk, it’s confusing for me.

Anyways, that scene with BC made my day. Ty for the translation Ellie!!

Oh for sure, Chung Myung is still broken… That being said, how can he remain broken when there’s a person who is even more broken than him but still manages to be the most reliable one? (that was a rhetorical question)

What I mean is, now the weight has shifted and I think Chung Myung has realized that he doesn’t need to carry all the burden by himself ☺️ I think that’s a huge accomplishment for both, BC and CM!

I mean, it can be weird to say but, isn’t the fact that they are barely holding on something that makes them more like CM than less like him..? Since the start this story was CM having just lost everything to kill Cheonma, dying himself, and then coming back to life in a way he very much didn’t plan? Sometime I feel like he didn’t let himself think about more than helping Hwasan because otherwise he would crumble. He had so little sleep time that he once called a two hours night of sleep as the best sleep he had since age… CM isn’t it why you’re not growing!? But well, other than the fact he need both the time to train and to help Hwasan, he would have to deal with nightmares more if he slept more… Sleeping is when our brain process things the most… I think there are some things CM still isn’t ready to process TT^TT

I’m not sure about it, but he might be going to help the children frmo Diancang? Or maybe not if Diancang is already doing it? That or they will team up? I don’t think JG stopped going to help the wounded from Wudang because the Blood Palace is there and someone is needed to deal with it (I hope JG managed to figure out how to use immortal energy, or is going to very soon), so I don’t think it’s the place where BC need to go… But there is always more options I don’t considere in this novel.

Getting the feeling that this arc will end with Baek Cheon recovering his martial arts because Zhongnam like wudang & diancan finally saw no reason to stick to the old ways where sects are silos and selfish… The rebirth of the true gupailbang to face the heavenly demon!

I hope, really hope that baek cheon will get better too πŸ₯² All the sect leaders seem to be influenced by our baek cheon, it’s actually fun. He’s like chung mun but in a strong and tough guise that is more capable of influencing the thinking of every sect leader.

Now if I think about it baek cheon is often compared to chung mun, but i see them as the same but different (similar to CM and JIS, they are similiar but different). If Chung Mun has the determination to choose who should live and who should not to give the future to the hwasan disciples, then Baek Cheon is the executor of that desire in a clearer determination and what chung myung needs most right now.

Okay I have so many things I want to say. But first, I can’t move away from Baekcheon’s death flag πŸ₯Ή I hope it’s not true, Chung Myung has lost Chung Mun and losing Baek Cheon is too cruel.

I reread CM and BC’s conversation over and over again, when Chungmyung told BC to stay behind to protect Baek Cheon and got rejected, BC’s words saying that it’s Chung Myung’s job to lead them and fight and how Baek Cheon said there were other things he needed to do. Is this like a hint that it’s time for Chung Myung to take over the leadership himself instead of just being a sword?

Tang Gunak once said what if the sword named Chung Myung was held by Chungmyung himself, I think that’s where the meaning is? Chung Myung you are no longer just a hwasan sword but you are also the owner of the sword itself, the way chungmyung wants to rely on baek cheon’s figure really explains how he considers baek cheon as his light just like he has faith in what chung mun taught.

If Chung mun used to teach Chung myung who didn’t understand how to fight for something he didn’t realize it was precious, I think baek cheon’s role here is his continuation to teach chung myung how to fight for something precious even when the struggle is meaningless just don’t give up on fate because that’s what being human is all about, unlike jang ilso who threw himself away.

    I read some comments on naver and got some theories that seems worth considering;

    1. JIS looking at chung myung means he’s looking at BC too, right, maybe his last move is also related to Baek Cheon’s existence like making him a hostage or whatever.
    2. CM and JIS fight like crazy and when one of them is about to lose their life, then cheonma comes to ruin the war (since the heavenly executioner also hasn’t appeared, last time he said he will go to the north to check something, isn’t the north is the current war location in wudang. it was on the maps). If this happens maybe JIS finally escapes from the war?
    3. Gamyeong’s death to save ilso. Seeing his eyes that shook for a moment when he looked at jang ilso it seems like he understands that ilso will risk his neck to overcome this war, I doubt gamyeong will let this go easily.
    4. This is the most unpleasant assumption, how Biga seems to somehow want the war to end with sapaeryeon’s victory and make chung myung kneel… I want to ignore it but this could happen even though I don’t know where the story will go next

by the way thanks for the translation ellie ❀️

My initial thought was also that JIS’s idea was to target BC… But then I thought that that was kinda obvious, and Biga really likes to pull weird plot twists when it comes to JIS.

That being said, Geumryong is still missing… πŸ‘€

Also, if Biga hasn’t killed off any important character in 1819 chapters, he won’t start killing them now. Baek Cheon holds a strong place in the narrative, there’s no other character that can replace him so he won’t die easily.

And I still think BC will be healed before Magyo shows up. Biga has been showing that the crew still has space to grow (with that Jo Geol’s new technique and that other technique they haven’t fully learned yet). In my mind, that’s the order in which the story should go: one last level up –> final arc.

I really liked your comparison of Chung Mun and Baek Cheon πŸ₯Ί

β€œIs this like a hint that it’s time for Chung Myung to take over the leadership himself instead of just being a sword?” – i think it is more about the time when baek cheon was adamant to be at the forefront despite his condition and to always fight first and to die in battle. and now baek cheon is accepting his condition and he is not going to the frontline, but he is trying to do something else he can.
β€œChung Myung you are no longer just a hwasan sword but you are also the owner of the sword itself” – mmm. i think it was kind of explored when chung myung was made the general of the alliance. and put in charge. but he still needs people to lean on. and baek cheon overlapping with chung mun give a vibe of… chung myung still having that person who guides him.
      1. i pray its wrong, but it seems plausible
      2. for me it doesn’t seem like demonic cult would interfere in this war
      3. ouf, gamyeong-ah, i hope u die
      4. it’s so painful??? and it doesn’t seem like sapaeryeon would win.. all the build up with all the cheonumaeng arcs and them all growing into mini chung myungs would be flushed down the drain. does it rly make sense from a storytelling perspective..

Personally I am more interested to see ho gamyeong die than jang ilso, if you think about the person who should be hated the most it would be jang ilso but somehow ho gamyeong is on a level more irritating to watch than ilso (I want to pull his hair)

Chung Myung is a cute little tsundere who is obviously worried about Baek Chun but he treats him so harshly and coldly. Tsk tsk. Our little Chung Myung can’t express himself very well. Thankfully, Baek Chun sees through Chung Myung! I’m so happy to see Chung Myung feeling a little better and wanting to rely on his Sasuke! And it’s not Chung Myung’s fault. You should rely on others and not just carry the burden on yourself!

Well as usual Jang Ilso’s cards are obviously out but Biga is supporting him strongly so he will continue with us and I actually don’t want him to die in this arc. Plus it looks like we will see the end of this war soon as we will see Jang Ilso and Chung Myung fight and I still have hope that Chung Myung won’t sit idly by. Unlike Jang Ilso, Chung Myung’s cards are still hidden. Jang Ilso himself said that his previous victories over other sects were simply because Chung Myung was busy but here Chung Myung is on the battlefield and he is watching everyone. Don’t forget that there are the elders of Mount Hua, Baek Ah, Jin Geum Ryong, the Shaolin Sect, the Haenam Sect and the Beggars’ Union Sect who haven’t been mentioned yet so they will definitely have a role in this war not to mention variables like the Diankang Sect which Baek Chun is obviously going to and the distant Kunlun Sect and the most important variable which is the Heavenly Executioner.

Thank you so much for the translation!!! This chapter is really making me smile. Wudang is even more motivated to destroy the enemy, Jang Ilso had to go through a big shock, we see even more result of the Chungmyungization of the Central Plain, and we got to see BC feeling better and CM feeling like relying on him!!! I have reached a new level of happiness!! Thank you Ellie and thnk you Biga!! (not that Biga will see it but it’s the spirit!)

first of all….WUDANG SECT MEMBERS THE SLAUGHTERERS

    GOGOGOGO WUDANG!!!!!!

This character development is the among the best things in this arc…I’m glad they understood ‘trust on the rear ones’ on time and that if they leave here they’ll trash everything.

Baek cheon is the best emotional support fr, chung myung finally said something that is not stabs to the heart.

‘maybe I’ve gotten old’ awwww my fav grandpa

And ilso, my clown cockroach, boy why you not dead yet?

Ilso’s plan better not have anything to do with baek cheon, even better if it fails miserably but he said it’s the last strategy so it’s unlikely ΰ²₯_ΰ²₯

all in all I’m just happy we are nearing the end even if it takes 50 chapters more just for the grand finale.

Thanks a lot for the translation ellie ❣️

ILCHEONG CRUMBSDKWDNWIDN ofc Ilso thinks cm and him are similar. they can see right through each other and are able to predict each other’s moves the only difference is that Jis didnt comprehend how much Cm has cultivated the other people around him. His journey with Ogeom and Cheonwoomaeng are disclosed to Jang Ilso– Jang Ilso merely thinks of these bodies of power as hollow surfaces that collapse after Chung Myung is occupied and that clear distinction is what causes his downfall. Saparyeon was made to be in Jis’s image and Cheonwoomaeng wasn’t just made for Mount Hua’s success, it was made for the sects to make a consensus and come together with one collective goal unlike the facade of Gupailbang.

Moreover, Jang Ilso merely believes Cm hides under the facade of righteousness and that he is innately selfish like him. He dosen’t acknowledge his altruistic reasonings so seeing how there’s now “Many Taoists” it’s coming back to bite him.

I’m guessing his last trump card is for him to fight himself– moreso, him fighting chung myung.

ilsogamyeong being ilsogamyeong caught me off guard lmao but THE POV SWITCH??? AAAAAAAAAAA 😭😭😭 earlier i was telling my friend how baekcheon n chungmyung are the scales of hope v despair, and strength v will. I knew hope n despair positions were traded w each other. But this ch also shows that the role of strength n will are also traded.

there are characters who are parallel to cm, and there r those that are opposite. But the one that exists in harmony w cm is definitely bc. They stand on the opposite sides of the scale, perfectly balancing it πŸ₯ΉπŸ˜ existing in harmony!!! Like taichi!!! Aaah!! I love them sm, both telling the other not to die 😭😭 but they seriously better not die =-= but really, so good!!

Tsk tsk Ilso rarely listens to what Ho G says

That can’t be healthy for their relationship

Even if he knows what Ho G will say or wants to say, it’s still important to hear it

If nothing else, hear how he says it
