Chapter 1839

That’s why it’s no fun. (4)

ROTMHS Glossary || About page

People are bound to change.

No matter how desperately one tries not to change, once they’ve been worn down by the world and their light has faded, there comes a moment when they face ‘oneself’ that has become boundlessly different.

How much more true must this be on a battlefield?

On the battlefield, where living as a human is not allowed, one must change and discard oneself in order to survive. The soul burns to grey ashes, crumbling bit by bit, and even the parts one believed to define ‘myself’ are unconsciously torn away over time.

Witnessing scenes that tear at your heart repeatedly eventually make you grow numb. Experiencing the soul-rending pain of loss countless times eventually dulls its impact.

Persisting while discarding more and more of oneself, there comes a moment of realization. The parts you initially believed were essential no longer remain – not even a handful.

Chung Myung certainly felt that way. He had been through too much to speak of pain. By now, he had lost so much that it was difficult to even talk about loss.

Yet he came to a new understanding: no matter how much one loses or discards, a person cannot change completely.

He realized this when the heart he thought had grown numb was crushed by a dull ache he couldn’t ignore. Even if you try to change, there are things that won’t change, and even if you try to lose them, there are things you cannot bring yourself to throw away.

Chung Myung silently gazed at the devastation unfolding before his eyes.

These were people who had certainly been alive and breathing just moments ago. People who would have viewed the world with bright eyes and spoken and laughed freely, were now cooling lifelessly upon the ground.

‘Lord Zhuge…….’

The one collapsed at the very front was Zhuge Jain.

It was a horrific sight. He had died with his eyes wide open, unable to close them. The instant Chung Myung met those hollow eyes, he involuntarily squeezed his own shut. A heavy sense of deja vu kept pulling him down into some deep, distant place.

He felt dizzy. Simply just dizzy.

“Chung… Myung…”

Someone’s call reached him. It was a voice filled with uncertainty, not clearly asking for anything. It was simply a desperate attempt to confirm the presence of someone at their side.

At that voice, Chung Myung barely managed to hold onto his sinking consciousness and opened his eyes again. Nothing before him had changed, but before long, a familiar expression settled upon his face.

Chung Myung slowly turned around.

He could see the faces of his Sahyeongs. At some point, those endlessly reliable faces had come to look like those of lost children. Perhaps it was because Chung Myung’s soul had become too exhausted.

The emotion showing on his Sahyeongs’ faces was closer to stunned astonishment than despair. Their wandering gazes, not knowing where to settle, all at once turned to Chung Myung as though by silent agreement.

Chung Myung felt like he might be crushed by the weight of those stares.

He knew what he had to say, knew exactly what choice he had to make.

Empty consolations are meaningless. There’s nothing that can be done here. They needed to move swiftly in pursuit. If there’s time to cry over what was lost, it’s better spent protecting what they were yet to lose.

So… so they had to go. Turn their backs on what remains behind, acting as if nothing had happened.

“…”

Yet he couldn’t force a single word out. Even when he tried to open his mouth forcefully, only a hoarse metallic rasp managed to escape.

Chung Myung only hoped that the cracks spreading across the mask he wore on his face would not be visible to them.

Just as Chung Myung bit his tongue and gathered all his strength to speak again, it happened.

“…..Chung…….“

Chung Myung’s eyes trembled. Pulled by that faint voice, he turned around as if entranced.

“…Myung.“

Step.

His feet moved of their own accord. Slowly, one step at a time, never stopping.

Amid the gruesome corpses, someone was struggling to rise. The effort looked so painful it seemed they might collapse at any moment.

Chung Myung’s pace quickened with each step.

Splash.

Sloshing through the blood that rose to his ankles, he was now nearly running.

“Lord Tang!”

The moment Yoon Jong’s scream-like cry rang out behind him, Chung Myung was already racing forward like a streak of light. He barely managed to reach out and catch Tang Gunak’s collapsing body.

Flinch.

But as soon as Chung Myung’s hand touched Tang Gunak’s body, he recoiled in shock and pulled his hand back. A deep sense of alienation and a terrible sense of familiarity struck him all at once.

Seeing Tang Gunak about to collapse again, Chung Myung quickly realized his mistake and grabbed both of his shoulders in a hurry.

He hadn’t been mistaken. He was cold – so cold it was hard to believe he was alive.

How could he not know what that meant? Chung Myung’s hands, clutching Tang Gunak’s shoulders, trembled faintly.

“Lord Tang!”

Arriving late, Yoon Jong gasped for breath. The moment he saw the gruesome wounds carved into Tang Gunak’s body, he bit down on his lip.

It was a miracle he was even still breathing. Every single wound looked dire. There was even a gaping hole in the center of his chest.

‘This…..’

He can’t be saved.

No matter who comes.

Tang Gunak’s one remaining eye moved slowly. Yet it couldn’t focus – it wandered through empty space, never quite reaching Chung Myung.

“Are… you… there?”

Yoon Jong saw it – the tremor running through Chung Myung’s shoulders, as though he might collapse at any moment.

He’d lost his sight. No, he couldn’t even tell that Chung Myung’s hand was on his shoulder.

“Are you………”

“Lord Tang….”

Chung Myung forced himself to speak, squeezing the words out. At that, Tang Gunak’s face momentarily softened.

“….You’re here.”

Tang Gunak slowly reached out his hand. Chung Myung instinctively grasped it firmly. Blood running down Tang Gunak’s hand trickled along Chung Myung’s wrist.

“Is… Pae…?

Tang Gunak asked, and Yoon Jong reflexively looked around. Tang Pae? Was Tang Pae among the corpses? If he had been, they would surely have noticed right away.

In that case…

“He’s alive.”

Just then, without a shred of hesitation, Chung Myung answered. Sensing the confidence in his voice, a faint relief passed over Tang Gunak’s face.

“….Thank goodness…”

But the relief didn’t last long. He urgently turned his empty gaze towards where he presumed Chung Myung to be and spoke with difficulty.

“Hwasan Geomhyeop… that bastard… that bastard, you must chase him…”

“Lord.”

“He’s aiming for our backs… Go save the others…”

Seeing Tang Gunak’s shoulders convulse under the strain, Chung Myung pulled him into a strong embrace. Chung Myung’s face twisted in anguish.

“Leave me and go…..!”

“That bastard.”

Chung Myung spoke in a resolute voice. Though his expression had been horribly contorted a moment earlier, now a pale smile played across his lips.

“I brought him down.”

Tang Gunak’s eye wavered. Chung Myung smiled even more brightly at him. Though he knew Tang Gunak wouldn’t see it, he hoped at least the warmth in his voice would reach him.

“So, it’s all right. You don’t have to worry.”

“…Truly…?”

“Yes.”

He knew.

Tang Gunak was right. He always was.

They had to leave him behind. Abandon the one who couldn’t be saved and find those who could be. Hadn’t Chung Myung himself thought the same way?

But he couldn’t.

“That’s good…..”

Only then did a faint smile bloom at the corners of Tang Gunak’s lips. It was a face that seemed to show a genuine relief.

Yoon Jong desperately covered his mouth with his hand. Im Sobyeong turned away, staring off into the distant sky.

All the disciples of Hwasan who remembered their time with Tang Gunak lowered their heads and stifled their sobs, so he wouldn’t hear them, so that no anxiety would taint his final moments.

Tang Gunak deserves that. At the very least, he had the right to a peaceful death.

“Hwasan Geomhyeop.”

Chung Myung did not answer. No, he could not.

Tang Gunak’s voice was clearer than before, and Chung Myung knew all too well what that meant. He had seen it countless times and experienced it countless times, yet it was something he could never grow accustomed to.

“Take care of the Tang Clan… and Tang Pae.”

“…Yes.”

“He may be a fool, but he’s not a bad one. You know that, don’t you?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Nokrim…”

“Damn it, you’re worrying about every little thing. And how did you even know I’m here?”

When Im Sobyeong replied curtly, Tang Gunak tried his best to smile.

“Of course… our first meeting wasn’t particularly pleasant… but it was the same for everyone here.”

Chung Myung and Im Sobyeong chuckled softly and nodded. The start had indeed been unfortunate – no one could deny that.

“Still… I…”

Tang Gunak, speaking while halting his breath, suddenly stared blankly at something. A place no one else could see, a sight only he could behold.

“…I enjoyed it.”

Chung Myung lowered his head.

“This isn’t your fault… It was fortunate… meeting you.”

“Lord.”

“Finally, I can also….”

Tang Gunak chuckled quietly. Blood trickled steadily from his lips as he did.

“Chung… Myung…”

“Yes”

“Don’t blame yourself too much. That always troubled me. Haven’t you already done more than enough…”

Chung Myung silently tightened his grip on Tang Gunak’s hand.

“…..I’m grateful.”

“It’s I… who should be grateful.”

Chung Myung had not forgotten.

He would never forget who – among those outside his own sect – was the first to believe in him. Not until the moment he drew his last breath.

“Don’t worry about the Tang Clan. I will make sure… it finds its rightful place again.”

Tang Gunak did not bother to say thank you once more. Such words were unnecessary now.

He simply believed. In the smallest and youngest friend* he knew. The only true companion* he ever had in his life.

“Soso…”

There was gentle affection in Tang Gunak’s voice.

“It would be… nice… if she doesn’t cry.”

Little by little, strength faded from Tang Gunak’s hand.

Clenching his teeth, Chung Myung held his breath. Not even the tiniest gasp or sob escaped him. He bit his lip and buried his face in his shoulder, making sure not the slightest bit of anxiety would mar this man’s final moments.

He prayed silently, again and again. Let Tang Gunak never sense this trembling.

That only peace would fill him now.

At last, Tang Gunak’s movement ceased entirely. Even though Chung Myung knew he was gone, he continued to look down at Tang Gunak in his arms for a long time.

Upon his closed eyes rested an utterly peaceful smile. Chung Myung etched that smile – and that face – into his memory, so he would never forget.

Only after quite some time did Chung Myung gently lay Tang Gunak down. Looking at the man now lying still, he spoke the last words he had been unable to say before.

“……Thank you for your hard work.”

At last, someone’s quiet sob broke loose behind him. Those who had endured until now were finally releasing their anguished cries.

But there was no time left to be consumed by sorrow.

Chung Myung slowly rose. He bowed his head slightly towards Tang Gunak, whose eyes were closed as if in peaceful sleep. After engraving that image in his mind one last time, he turned around at once.

“Chung Myung-ah…”

Chung Myung’s face was as calm as ever.

“Don’t cry.”

At those words, Yoon Jong bit down on his lip.

“It’s not time yet. Once we’ve taken that bastard’s head, then-”

“…”

“That’s when you cry.”

The disciples of Hwasan wiped away their tears roughly and nodded firmly. Cold resolve slowly seeped into eyes previously blurred with grief.

“Let’s go.”

At someone’s call, they all turned and moved out.

Chung Myung had lied to Tang Gunak. And everyone there had tacitly allowed it. But there was still time to make that lie into truth.

The disciples of Hwasan surged forward.

Once Jongli Gok, who could not hide his sorrow, and Meng So, whose eyes were reddened, departed as well, Im Sobyeong remained until the very end, staring intently at Tang Gunak, who lay as though asleep.

Could Tang Gunak really not have known that it was a lie?

“…Right up to the end… acting so high-and-mighty.”

Im Sobyeong gave Tang Gunak a deep bow. An act of respect he had never once shown, from the moment they first met until now.

When he raised his head again, Im Sobyeong’s expression was also filled with resolve.

As even Im Sobyeong departed, rain began falling softly onto the bodies left behind.

That lukewarm rain gently brought a faint warmth to those who had already been growning cold.

Well, let him go plant onions.

Ellie, Ellie, imagine this scene in the afterlife: Tang Gunnack arrives nervously in heaven for his friend but still trusts him, only to be greeted by Tang Bo saying, “He was my friend first, and he was only yours because I asked him to.” Tang Gunnack, realizing this, responds, “You’re a thing of the past, old man. I’m the present.” Then they strike a JoJo-style pose before Chun Mun punches them both for dying in their sajae’s arms, traumatizing him even more.

Meanwhile, Cheon Jin and A-Pyo would be laughing while the other leaders from a hundred years ago watch, noticing how ancestor and descendant look alike.

Anyway, don’t they say death is not the end?

I had to go back and see what arc was that, the Hainam arc was one of my favorite arcs 😊 I think it’s after that arc when things get progressively darker… but even then there are many epic moments. The build up to this arc was going well! Then it gets to this arc, the Saparyeon Invasion and this is where things fall apart a bit (in my opinion). I’m still here though, still reading! Because this story is good even when it’s bad lol

Currently there aren’t other stories like ROTMH (even TBATE and ORV completely fell apart from the initial hype for me).

So read with no fear! There’s a bunch of us in this journey together! We’ll share the pain 🥲

There’s so many parallels in this chapter its fucking insane

The first, most obvious one is Gunak replicating the scene of Chung Myung and Tang Bo. Both of them died the same way as if this is a sacrifice Chung Myung can never fully escape– in both lives, he couldn’t save the one person that had the most intimate relationship with him in Cheonwoomaeng. That’s what makes it doomed and almost a cycle of pain and losses as a consequence to ending such a painstaking war. Not only that, but they both die with a smile in genuine relief. That’s what pains me the most. Not to mention, the responsibility Chung Myung carries of not being able to save them even though both of them don’t want that grief to be inflicted upon him– i’m gonna kill myself. Gunak and Tang Bo by plot line were made to be the loving character to the protagonist that receives anguish as an ultimate act of selflessness. The only difference being Chung Myung now understands what he must do and how to navigate the pains and losses unlike Tang Bo who was more of a wake-up call.

The second parallel is Gunak and Jang Ilso. Coincidentally, the first ever member of Cheonwoomaeng Jang Ilso meets is Gunak, where Gunak threatens Jang Ilso to not hurt Chung Myung. Gunak was always a variable to Jang Ilso that has shown unyielding loyalty to Chung Myung. If Biga is extremely evil, this is a parallel during that time. Jang Ilso called him ‘an old time friend’ not only did Jang Ilso want to kill someone so engrained in Gangho and everyone’s lives as a whole, he wanted to specifically hurt Chung Myung by killing the man that advocated for him at the start of the novel and Gunak couldn’t possibly have conceived that possibility. Gunak overpowering Jang Ilso at the start of the novel just for him to come back and one-sidedly massacre him to give Chung Myung emotional turmoil.

    Biga, you’re evil.

He was gentle and caring, full of dignity and so honorable. A father, a friend, a leader right up til the very end. Caring for others, caring for his family, caring for Chung Myung… People trusted him, counted on him, relayed on him.

The only reason he needed to have an unwavering trust in Chung Myung was that they were friends. Oh, if we all had friends like that… He didn’t always understand his reasons but he did understand the heavy weight his friend carried in his small shoulders. He was never able to help him as much as he wanted, but he stayed and followed him through everything, supported him as much as he could.

He was the first one to truly believe in CM, to truly understand that he was doing something much more bigger than what anyone could remember.

He rushed through the Tangze River not once but twice in order to help Chung Myung rescue two different sects. He even saved Chung Myung from a certain death the second time.

He was always like a puppy whenever he heard that Chung Myung was around or that CM had sent a message or just when he heard one of his crazy adventures. That excitement that comes from hearing about a friend. Good times.

He was brutally killed, in an ending I’m not sure he deserved. But I guess that’s the point, war isn’t fair.

I’m glad he went in peace.

To Biga… I have much to say but everything that comes out are spiteful and resentful words only. Today, I want to show respect to one of the best characters of this story that we have lost. So I’ll save my words for later.

Thank you Ellie 💔 What a way to start the week with…

he assumed the position of the leader he wasn’t supposed to be (he was the vice leader of the alliance), instead of hyun jong. and died doing what he thought was right.
tang gunak never ran away from responsibility, i think he was one of the few truly righteous characters.
im never forgiving hyun jong for abandoning his duties and throwing gunak in there basically alone (the alliance leader position). even when the tang clan was chased and fell, gunak never abandoned his duties and didn’t shut himself in a room

Reading this I feel like if Gunak died, it’s only fair that Hyun Jong makes a similar sacrifice, either by dying himself or being held accountable for selfishly leaving his position in the first place.

I’m glad that now I have a character to whom I can direct my anger (that isn’t JIS or the author himself), thank you Ellie!! ^__^

it’s only fair if hyun jong dies… ugh i rly can’t do this with my hyun jong hate.

no disciple of hwasan died since the beginning of the novel. the worst they had was un geom losing his arm and bc cracking his dantian.
so many sect suffered through this war, so many people died, some sect annihilated, some sects lost half of their disciples.

everyone chooses to fight except hyun jong, who shuts himself in a room because of the choice he made himself and no one else agreed to. the hypocrisy. the next level of being pathetic.

he also never fully acknowledged chung myung, always showing his doubts or questioning chung myung’s decisions, while chung myung did everything possible, while all hyun jong did was “preserve” or whatever (basically sitting on his ass playing a saint).

if hyun jong has no haters it means im ded.

Thank you for translating this chapter Ellie, it was magnificient. I’m also really grateful to Biga for having written a character I love so much, and to have written his final scene so well. It was truly a masterpiece to read, and which I want to cry I have also been smiling since a while, I’m relieved Cheongmyeong could reach Gunak before he died, and I hope that Gunak’s words to not blame himself too much will reach Cheongmyeong in return. I love them so much. I’m also worried or Gunak’s kids though, if his death hurt Cheongmyeong so much, there is no doubt they will be even more hurt. At least they won’t be alone in their grief.

in keeping with biga’s style, its way more likely Jang Ilso took him hostage. I don’t see any way he could have escaped when the others couldn’t AND chung myung’s group didn’t encounter him on their way to rescue them.

tang gunak would have probably seen him being taken hostage? i think gunak probably was so gravely injured bcs he was making it possible for tang pae to have a chance. idk.

hostage situation is possible too but he could also run away in the other direction from where cm and ims where going, bcs he didn’t know where they were, everyone dispersed through the battlefield.

well biga really went and did it. Such a core character and he got an offscreen one chapter death. Plus the head of the Zhuge clan too. Like ellie said, basically all the righteous sects and families are being decimated, who could face the demonic sect when they come? Only logical candidates could be a rejuvenated Baek Cheon or Chung Myung after some sort of timeskip, where they’ve helped restore some of the shattered sects, but that wouldn’t feel particularly good if sects lose part of their core identity and are rebuilt in Mount Hua/Chung Myung’s image. I feel like biga is writing himself into a corner like this, where something not in keeping with previously established principles is going to be needed to essentially reset what this arc has done. Or he might just continue on this path, Jang Ilso wins everything, and then he is the leader of the fight against heavenly demon 😛 where the ‘return of the mount hua sect’ is as a subservient sect to sapa

This is my exact concern. None of the choices Biga has made so far make any amount of sense if he wants to continue the plot against the demonic sect. Several strong characters are now dead, and out of the six strong heads of Sapaeryeon since its founding, only three have died (Ghost Castle, Black Dragon King, and Sun Palace lord), whilst Gupailbang and Cheonumaeng have lost almost all of their masters, sect leaders and elders (Southern Island, Shaolin, Wudang, Tang, Zhuge, Qingcheng, Peng, Kongtong, Emei, and Namgung), nevermind mentioning how most of the central plains is now reliant on the Sogaju’s of the family’s or young disciples of the sect’s, which are either crippled (Baek Cheon) or simply not strong enough yet (Seol So Baek, and Tang Pae and Jan off the top of my head). The math isn’t working. I get Biga wants to make it tense and have actual stakes and losses, but I feel he’s gotten so tied up in writing the drama, he’s forgotten the absolute walking nuke that is the Heavenly Executioner, the other Demonic Bishop, and the now resurrected Heavenly Demon

After digesting this chapter a bit more and reading the comments, I feel like Big a has a plan after all. This whole war against Saparyeon gives me the vibe of a big prequel to that other war. It’s like this is Vol. 1 of Chung Myung’s reincarnation story and then Vol. 2 will be the war against Magyo.

As you said, math doesn’t add up, so a time skip is needed for sure. A long one, I’d say. I think Chung Myung mentioned how much time he needed to get to his past level (I remember thinking “wow that’s a lot” so maybe he mentioned 10-20 years?). I think this was after the last time skip, when Hwasan did closed training for 3 years.

All this makes me think that Biga doesn’t want kids to fight against Magyo, he wants them to be capable generals, experienced warriors, experienced war advisors… To be adults capable of shouldering as much responsibility as Gunak did. So yeah, I’m thinking of this as the “story before the story”.

I know that if it is like this, it means that it will take years upon years til completion 😅

What can I say after such a chapter… Words fail me… I think it’s been a long time since I read a work as serious as this one on the theme of reincarnation.

How many Korean light novels on the theme of reincarnation don’t end up wanting to repair a fractured reality? Most, if not almost all, end up saying that the second chance is the right one, as if the first life had ended tragically only because of the protagonist’s simple ignorance. As if his destiny depended solely on himself, and that his destiny involved only his own life. But his destiny isn’t just about his life, it’s also about the lives of others, his past and present ties. Others also have an impact on his life, just as he has an impact on others’. This desire to do things differently is present, but unlike most light novels with this reincarnation theme, it’s not enough. The choice is to show that time is not fixed, not to make it simple in the end. Events don’t happen at the same pace as in the past. The demonic clan has arrived earlier, while Chyung Myung is not as strong as in the past, even if its foundations are much better. The other clans are at a lower level than in the past. And why is it that if the only enemy in the past was the Celestial Demon, it would be the same 100 years later? As if the only history of this world would simply be the war between the Celestial Demon and the others. I think it’s so appropriate to depict an unpredictable reality.

Moreover, I sometimes think that Jang Ilso is somehow the fruit of this past, of this cyclical aspect, in his reflections at times on the world, on his own greed and on himself. Doesn’t this past and present split between virtuous and evil clans, between rich and poor, between rulers and the people they think they rule, ultimately reflect Jang Ilso (what Jang Ilso has suffered and what he puts others through)? I’m digressing x’).

Returning to the story, I have the impression of seeing this reflection on the cyclical aspect of life not only in a broad way, on the forgetting of previous horrors which do not prevent other horrors from happening again, but also more concretely in this story, of seeing that the character’s life does not depend solely on himself, and that the will of the Chyung Myung of the past is no weaker than that of the Chyung Myung of the present. From the moment the character has linked up with other characters in the present, lived with them, it’s not simply the end of his past life but really a new life that is taking shape for him and a life at all for the others with difficult moments to live.

So really, this chapter is sad and almost took me by surprise. In a way, it’s obvious to see characters die, given the way the story turns out, but in most books on reincarnation, all they want to do is tell of a better life, as if it could erase the wounds of the past. But a new life can’t erase the past. It’s not such a healthy psychic construct. I think it’s healthy to hope for a better future, but it’s not so healthy to think that the wounds of the past are simply erased because the future is better. It’s a kind of psychic escape. Korean lights novels with the theme of reincarnation and depicting a second life that’s easily better don’t really talk about the psychic consequences of this gap between the despair of a first life of suffering and a second life of happiness. Some do (which I find interesting, as it often leads to themes of depression and the psychological after-effects of the first life).

In any case, whether the second life is easily better or simply another life with its suffering and moments of happiness, mourning has to be done. Somehow, I have the impression that Biga evokes this theme of mourning for the first life. We can see that Chyung Myung is mourning, little by little, for his past. It’s not over but this theme is not avoided. It’s clear that the protagonist isn’t running away thinking that living a second life will erase the pain and loss of his past (well, because he didn’t want this life and he’s also been grumbling about this second life). Because it’s a reality: he lost his loved ones in his first life, only to die just afterwards, without having had time to grieve. Of course, his mourning isn’t over yet, of course, this life is adding to his suffering, of course, mentally, he’ll probably take steps forward as well as back. As, in fact, he already does. Because that’s what mourning is, the psychic state. It’s not linear.

I think it’s very healthy that Biga doesn’t ignore what’s often behind this desire to write stories on the theme of reincarnation….

Firstly, that a second life won’t necessarily be better, because the protagonist isn’t alone in this story, just as in the past he’s linked up with people, enemies as well as friends, in the future he’s linked up with people, enemies as well as friends. These are not the same people (with the exception of those who are over 100 years old…) and certainly not the same figures. Chyung Myung’s relations with the virtuous and evil clans represent the biggest difference with the past (there, as friends, are Nokrim, sects among the 9 traditional Sects, many families among the 5 traditional families… and as enemies, not only the demo clan but also Jang Ilso and the others).

Secondly, the second life won’t be any better because it would aim to erase the first life. Grief, a difficult theme, is addressed. He’s still aware of his first life, just as he’s aware that this is a second life.

Thirdly, the second life won’t necessarily be a better one by learning from its mistakes, because in the end, as this chapter so aptly puts it, despite the losses, despite the changes undergone, it’s not a total intrinsic upheaval of what makes up a person’s identity. There are objectively qualified errors that are not subjectively errors for the person. Chyung Myung may have qualified some of his past choices as mistakes, but it’s clear that this is only an external view of himself, of the commonly accepted thinking that “making sacrifices for the common good” is the right thing to do. Because Chyung Myung has already tried, is trying and will do anything to save people who are dear to him, even people who are not necessarily dear to him out of empathy, and Chyung Myung will refuse to make tactical choices, far above others, to weigh up lives as if they were nothing. This is not to say that Chyung Myung won’t make tactical choices at any time – in fact, in the course of history, he has often had an existential crisis linked to this – but it is clear that, on several occasions, he has refused to think about strategies that involve using people as pawns to achieve his goal. This is the fundamental difference between Jang Ilso and Chyung Mung. Because yes, in the end, it’s a question of identity, of something vital. Not so much a question of right and wrong, but more a question of not losing oneself along the way. As the prophet-monk said to Chyung Myung (I have the impression that this is what Jang Ilso is also trying to do, not to lose himself, but by denying the coming threat (the demonic clan) and this haste, isn’t he losing himself?)

So yes, for these three reasons, this story will make us sad, make us smile, make us rage, surprise us because we no longer know what’s going to happen (Jang Ilso as the enemy and not just the figure of the celestial demon, as we might have assumed at the start, just as Chyung Myung did), that in the end we come to doubt what we think we know about the past (the figure of the celestial demon, I think Biga will be able to give us some thoughts on this figure as he did with Jang Ilso, not only on the celestial demon’s objectives but also on what he reflects in relation to the other characters, in relation to the world…). .. ), that in the end we come to doubt the climax of the story (it may not be the most important subject for the main character, and the confrontation with the demonic clan won’t be long, for whatever reason, compared to the confrontation with Jang Ilso, which still hasn’t ended… ), that the first tragic life doesn’t mean that there won’t be further suffering (I get the impression that we all had this impression that in this life, the protagonist could perhaps die, because there was this heaviness from the start about Chyung Myung, but that at least his loved ones from his second life will be alive, whereas with this chapter… it’s actually wishing for the lesser evil for the protagonist, it was harder for him to lose again 😥 😥 ….).

So yes, I think this story is unlike the others, with its short chapters and, at the same time, a length that makes it impossible to see the end in the face of… we have to admit, this overconsumption of stories which generally implies a reader behavior where when he starts a story, already asks for the end or at least expects to guess the moment when the end will arrive if not the end itself. We rail against the predictability of the story’s pace, but at the same time, we want it. But I think that wanting to know what’s going to happen at all costs will result in giving yourself less of a chance to enjoy the story in its entirety, its middle, and not just its end and beginning. I tend to think that you can enjoy a story better by taking the time to read it, to experience it, to make it your own than by just reading spoilers or skipping a ton of chapters. That’s how we can just as subjectively dislike a story, whether we like it or not. To know whether you like it or not, I tend to think you have to take the risk of really sitting down to read x’) (Yes, you can even philosophize about the reading experience. After all, if many of the characters in this story philosophize, we can too x’)…)

Sorry for the big review. I’m sorry if you’ve read this far or just spoil the ending xD.

It’s all these thoughts that came back to my mind while running away from the harsh reality that Tang Gunak is dead 😥 😥 We console ourselves as we can by telling ourselves that we’re letting the story carry us along 😥 Tang Gunak’s death is a hard blow not only for Chyung Myung but also for the others. It’ll be the younger generation who will take center stage, who will have to carry the burden. In fact, if the story of Chyung Myung’s first life is ever revealed, I think it will be to the young companions of Mont Hua, Baeck Cheon and other, including no doubt the young Shaolin disciple. Less certain for other young disciples from other sects.

It’s not said that there won’t be any deaths for the young companions. If so, it will be terrible for Chyung Myung, in a different, new way. Because if back then, he didn’t take the time to get attached to the new generation of Mount Hua and got more attached to his Sahyung and that Sajil whose body he found in the present as well as Tang Bo of the same generation as him, today he’s attached himself to the young generation of Mount Hua but not only, also of the other sects and clans. But let’s not think about it, one death is enough. After that, if we want to try and foresee, we can say to ourselves that Jongli Gok is likely to pass away, as well as Meng So for example, but not Im Sobyeong, he’s younger than the other chiefs, he’s part of the younger generation… 😥 😥 By the way, this chapter isn’t just about one death, it’s about two… Zhuge Jain too… The one who was one of the first of the three reluctant ones (with Jongli Gok and I don’t know who else…) at the first alliance meetings on the war, to let go, to finally get closer to the others in the alliance, Chyung Myung and so on. The fact that we didn’t get a description of these two deaths leads me to think that the confrontation with Jang Ilso is going to be tough, because he’s not going to be able to stop himself from recounting how it all happened… Maybe we’ll get some painful flashbacks.

Thank you very much for the translation of this and the previous chapters 🙂

So much the better if it wasn’t too long and confusing a review. I also enjoy reading reviews. I think that if this story makes us react, it’s because it has good qualities. There’s no denying that the character development is a little different from what I’m used to reading. The characters’ psychological development and physical abilities shine less on their individuality and more on their collectivity. Lots of philosophical musings and less time for traditional character development. But at the same time, this makes sense, as the characters fit much more into a community, a “family”, than in most stories. Even Chyung Myung wants to blend into this community, so it’s logical that he himself, having already developed so much, should have a development that shines less on his individuality. Finally in this story, I’m personally less looking forward to reading physical confrontations than intellectual ones between the characters x’) (Especially since in this story, physical confrontations have heavy consequences, Tang Gunak 😥 )

you know ive been super obsessed with this novel since 2023 but this will be the first and last comment i will ever make on these novel websites and thats solely because i want to express my appreciation for your review.

i really like how you were able to spot such important elements of the story instead of focusing on fun and cool stuff. its really hard to find someone who can connect the events in the story or see the psychological and moral attitudes of the characters the author is trying to show in a broader context, so i was very happy when i saw your detailed review.

well of course, everyone has their own interpretation of a work in their own world, thats obvious! i was just wishing i could talk or read more about the philosophical aspect of this story and how the unwavering beliefs of our MC show us a wonderful journey, however selfless and painful it may be. thats why this lovely review you wrote made me stop listening to the professor and focus my full attention on what you wrote lol

i totally agree with your point that a second life is not an opportunity for a better future and ending, but an experience that is at least as difficult, exhausting and full of pain as the first one– if not more so. this is the reason why the deaths in this arc didnt actually catch me off guard that much (im still grieving over dang gunak though..). because despite the changes in his life, in his people and the whole world around him, the only thing that remained same in cheongmyeong was his world view- his ideas. saving the innocent is so ingrained in his nature, taoism grows so strong in his soul that im sure no matter how many times he dies and rises again, he would still make the same decisions and face the same pain. and despite all this, he would still not give up his path.

thats why he is a very, very important character for me so im incredibly happy that he is understood so well by other people as well– like you :]

I don’t know what to say. I’m very touched by your comment. You thank me, even though the clarity of my expression is lacking in many passages in this review. I had also forgotten what it can feel like to exchange with other people about novels. So thank you also for your feedback, and for Chu and Ellie’s! I also wouldn’t have been able to experience the joy of these exchanges and this shared connection around our love for this story if it hadn’t been for the translation of this story and your feedback. So thank you ❤

Eva, I totally agree with you; you express Chyung Myung’s identity in just a few words: “saving the innocent is so ingrained in his nature, taoism grows so strong in his soul that im sure no matter how many times he dies and rises again, he would still make the same decisions and face the same pain. and despite all this, he would still not give up his path.” What you say also touches me because that’s also why I appreciate this story so much. It’s this protagonist, in all these facets, that made me love this story so much. This story began with him waking up alone and it ended up expanding with so many characters by the force of Chyung Myung’s soul which enlightens others and will end up enlightening him in return so that if he dies, he will not die in the same way as in his first life. I think he will be able to be soothed despite the losses that continue. They already enlighten Chyung Myung in light of this whole chapter and especially this realization that he will not change his identity despite the losses. I have this impression that this is what the monk means with his prophecy around Chyung Myung and the others around him.

Somewhere, in a different sense, even Jang Ilso enlightens him. Perhaps that’s why the monk came to him about Jang Ilso. Chyung Myung shines so brightly within himself that he attracted Jang Ilso, who, in another way, also stands out in his individuality. They are two beings who come together by being strong in terms of both physical strength and strength of conviction, which are part of their identity. You have so clearly highlighted the Taoist education and kindness that Chyung Myung was able to emerge from being at Mount Hua. Jang Ilso’s past also forged his identity. Both of them experienced, in a way, each in their own way, strong events that only strengthened their identity. So, beyond their fundamental differences, there was a kind of attraction-repulsion that was created between the two, but which worsened in the negative aspect, even into hatred as events unfolded. For both of them, I have this impression that there is this idea of not losing oneself, if it is more visible for Chyung Myung since it is an issue for him (especially with the words of the prophet monk), it is also for Jang Ilso in his crisis that he had and the answer that he says he found. I have this impression that their hatred between the two increased as their crisis arrived within themselves. Jang Ilso just wants to destroy him.

This is what he himself said to Tang Gunak. He wants to break him, I think, down to his identity that always shines, perhaps because of Jang Ilso’s identity that would weaken. It has become such a morbid obsession that he would lose, I think, his goal, ultimately, his path. It would perhaps be because of the result of this crisis that he had. From now on, he only hastens (since the Celestial Demon’s attack on one of his troops, the threat of which he clearly senses). Whereas Chyung Myung seems to be emerging from this crisis (I get that impression, judging by the words in this chapter) and, on the contrary, is taking his time.  He settles down beside Tang Gunak to accompany him in his final moments. With that strength of soul that allows us to appreciate him as we do in this chapter and that allowed us to connect with this story and with each other as readers.

So thank you very much for your exchanges, Eva, Chu, which also gave me the best moments of my two days. I didn’t expect any reaction, response to this outpouring of my thoughts, so thank you for taking the time to write your comments. I’m not, or no longer, used to exchanging with other people about novels.

Eva, thank you, if that wasn’t usual. When I read your comment, I’m sure you’re also a very pleasant person to chat with, on weekends as well as during the week. Have a nice day too.

“I think that if this story makes us react, it’s because it has good qualities.”
I very much agree about that! A story I don’t enjoy is one that doesn’t make me feel things, and Biga’s story has been giving me many feeling indeed. It is one of the reason why I love it so much.

Another of this reason is the difference on the way this story adresses the characters developments and the interpersonal relationships. It takes in account things I never saw in other stories, especially the wuxia, xianxia, and reincarnation stories I have read before. And even the things that are also taken in account in these other stories, Biga offers a totally different point of view that makes it so much more interesting to engage with this story. It feels like a true other reality, and not just a world based on some tropes which would crumble or lose its meaning without them. The characters really feel like their own persons, like humans. It’s something that is truly precious to find in another person’s writing. I could never truly explain how much happiness and love it gives me for this story, though I try.

What you said about Cheongmyeong is also part of why I am so glad to be reading him. He is someone with so much more good in himself that he ever accepted, and it is not that it is easy for him to be good, or that he can be good just by himself, but that he could find people that would encourage this part of him, offer him a hand to help and to offer support if he just accepts it. He cares so much and yet this cares cause him so much hurt and fear, of everything he has lost and everything he is terrified to lose, and yet he keeps on caring, and on giving part of himself only to have other people give part of themselves back to him, because they love him too, in their own ways, that are all different but never less meaningful. And it hurts parts of me and heals parts of me to see him gain and lose more as the world never stop moving and neither do the people in it. Nor does he, Cheongmyeong is still growing as a person, and it makes me feel so proud of him too. I know they are all just characters, but I don’t think I will ever see any of them as just that, nor will I want to.

Thank you, thanks to your comment I have been able to put these feelings into words, it is a very nice feeling to have been able to do so.

I will miss Zhuge Jain too, I loved him since this time he changed his mind so radically by showing the things he values and how he truly follows these values. It was impressive and also endearing, and he was one of the people I really hoped not to lose, although the list for those is quite long indeed. I don’t think I will be able to put my mind fully around what I feel about Gunak’s death, but at the very least I can say it was magnificiently written. Biga put so much care into this scene it’s like I could feel it physically. Well I kind of could, considering my face which I was reading it sure was making some expression, and I felt like there was adrenaline in my blood. I’m glad he didn’t leave alone and people that cherished him was alongside him, and I don’t think he felt cold when someone was embracing him and trying to offer him such precious peace before he left. This chapter just add to the so many reasons I am utterly in love with this story.

I completely agree with you. I think Biga has succeeded, at least for many readers, in making us connect with her way of describing events, her way of developing the characters, all of whom are part of a world she has made tangible. If someone else had written these ideas, it wouldn’t have been the same. It’s a whole, the writing style and the choices in how to approach things, the events, the characters with their emotions and their reactions to them. It’s rare to see an author who doesn’t forget that the context of the world in which the characters are embedded has an influence on them, and vice versa.

I also think, as you say, that we end up considering characters as more than just characters. It’s also my way of immersing myself in a story. It’s very Carthasis-like for the positive and negative emotions we can feel in our lives. I will also miss Zhuge Jain for all the reasons you mentioned. His death was sudden (I hope he didn’t have time to think about the regrets he had, but I have a feeling it was probably quick), almost in contrast to Tang Gunak, who was surely left alive on purpose and held on until Chyung Myung was present, as if to reassure himself and also try to reassure Chyung Myung about his final moments.

I also appreciated the way Biga wrote this chapter. It’s quite an art to begin with such profound reflections and then with the pain of reality. We almost feel as if we can sense the suspension of time that Chyung Myung feels, the silence, and the faint noise that upsets him with Tang Gunak. Fortunately, Tang Gunak had peaceful final moments, which will perhaps, after all that, prevent it from being too horrible for Chyung Myung when he thinks back on it.

        A beautiful and sad read.

Thank you also for these discussions about this novel

“If someone else had written these ideas, it wouldn’t have been the same.”
Yes, that’s part of what I love so much about stories, and why the writers are so amazing to me. The way the story belong to them, the work they put in it, and more importantly the part of themselves that become part of their story. No one can know what it’s like to write a specific story except the person that wrote it, so it’s always something to be grateful of that there are people that write these stories, and people that share them with us.

“We almost feel as if we can sense the suspension of time that Chyung Myung feels, the silence, and the faint noise that upsets him with Tang Gunak.”
Mhm, I felt that too. Sometime there are stories which are so well written some scenes feel like they are really given life. Biga’s story is one where it often happens to me. I think it’s in part because we truly get to know the characters as people, that we don’t need everything about them to be described to be able to feel what they would look like in some situations. It maks visualizing a very different experience.

“Fortunately, Tang Gunak had peaceful final moments, which will perhaps, after all that, prevent it from being too horrible for Chyung Myung when he thinks back on it.”
That’s something I think we’re all hoping. His pain is already so great, and his struggles seem far from stopping, or even slowing. He deserves so much more than a time of respite and healing, but it doesn’t feel like he will have either.
And Gunak… I appreciate that Biga gave him one of the greatest honor that can be given to a character by writing his ending in such a way. His clan might not have been with him, but his friends was, and so he not even close to lonely.
His curtain has fallen, and the applauses are deafening. And blinding. Wait no, that’s just me crying.😭Still, I hope the next time Cheongmyeong embraces someone, it won’t be because they are leaving.🥲

    RIP Tang Gunak!

    RIP Zhuge Jain!

I don’t want to say anything about Tang Gaju. Thinking about him is making everything worse. But Zhuge Lord! He was a great guy. Though he was initially reluctant to join the alliance, he quite sportingly adopted it, without any persuasion unlike Moyong Gaju. He also played the role of a strategist well and crucial for the new structure of Maeng. What a shame we saw so little of him! Rip!

And again Thank you Ellie for your hardwork, as you have suffered more while translating the whole thing. I came to know about your work very late, but still I like this so much! Thank you ❤

at this point everything has to be a dream literally like maybe this is some dream. That chung myung has been dreaming ever since he died unable to move on or some thing or maybe everything will reset and chung myung will go back in time

Ya sabía que iba a pasar esto por culpa de los spoilers, ver como avanzaban los capítulos fue agonizante.

    Me preocupa CheongMyeong

El lider de secta retirado no aparece ni los ancianos.

    Jin geumryong sigue desaparecido

    Todo es un desastre…
