Chapter 1901

There’s something I’d like to ask. (1)

ROTMHS Glossary || About page

If asked why he had come here, Chung Myung himself couldn’t really explain the reason.

Words like pity or understanding didn’t quite fit. The one buried before his eyes had no right to be pitied. Even less a right to be understood.

Even this unsightly grave felt excessive for Jang Ilso. In Chung Myung’s heart there wasn’t a speck of pity for Jang Ilso. He could be sure of that at least.

Even so, Chung Myung came here now.

If he said he just wanted to, would that be laughable? Perhaps those words from back then – saying he now wished to do as his heart led him – was what guided Chung Myung’s steps here. His heart that simply wanted to act, beyond duty and reason.

β€œWhat bullshit.”

Chung Myung let out a faint snort.

Trying to explain what can’t be clearly explained is a foolish act. Pretending to understand a problem that cannot be solved only produces a wrong answer. In the end, it will be nothing but an excuse.

Chung Myung admitted it. This was a mere whim, nothing more, nothing less.

β€œI’m the idiot who can’t resist a whim even in a situation like this.”

He couldn’t deny this fact.

β€œSo then……”

As he uncorked the bottle, Chung Myung muttered. The harsh scent of liquor pricked his nose. He knocked back a generous mouthful without hesitation, then roughly wiped his lips. Then he tilted the bottle over the low mound on which not even grass had grown.

Trickle, trickle, trickle.

The clear liquor fell, drawing a long line. The dark red earth deepened in color.

β€œBe grateful and drink it up. A stupid Sapa bastard like you won’t ever get the chance to taste the liquor given to you by a Taoist.”

Trickle, trickle, trickle.

After letting the liquor drip for a while like that, Chung Myung brought what remained back to his own lips.

Immersed in his solitary toast, he abruptly let the words slip out.

β€œYou who always acted smart… Why did you act so stupid. You could have stopped before it got this far. You pathetic idiot.”

Even if, after defeating Chung Myung, he had seized the world for a brief moment, the ending awaiting Jang Ilso would not have been much different. Jang Ilso must have known that full well.

There was only one way to avoid the predetermined tragedy… No, the only way to even delay it, was to stop before crossing the line.

But Jang Ilso chose, instead of stopping, to press forward until the very end. Even though he knew full well that at the end of it a wretched death awaited him.

Chung Myung muttered.

β€œYou, that’s what you felt you had to do.”

Because he would have had to carry through what he wanted to believe in. Had he collapsed in despair before that distant, towering wall, he would have truly become a nobody.

For Jang Ilso, for a man like Jang Ilso, that would have been a humiliation so immense it couldn’t even be compared with something like death.

β€œYou couldn’t have done otherwise, right…”

To deny himself, or to accept death. Of these two, what Jang Ilso would choose had been obvious without even asking.

β€œYeah, I know. And so…”

Chung Myung’s gaze turned towards the sky. Clear and spotless, so blue it almost stung, yet today it felt somewhat oppressive.

β€œI hate people like you.”

Is a life lived under humiliation, a life bent and broken, truly less than a proud death? Should one really deem it right to throw away one’s life for an ideal?

Of course, to some it will seem unspeakably noble, and to others utterly vile. Yet whichever path a man takes, Chung Myung could never, in the end, empathize with it.

That kind of life was too cruel.

An ideal so unyielding it does not bend, sometimes devours not only oneself but everything around it. To those blinded by a dazzling light, nothing around them is visible but the radiance.

Yes, just like…

Chung Myung once again tilted the bottle over Jang Ilso’s grave. Then, as if it were part of a set ritual, he brought it to his own lips. As though toasting one who doesn’t exist and speaking with one who is no longer here.

β€œThere’s something I’d like to ask. Back then… why did you smile?”

Naturally, no answer came back. No one would hear it. Because the dead cannot speak.

After a long silence, Chung Myung opened his mouth again.

β€œI don’t know what I was to you. I don’t even want to know. But to me, you were… someone I felt I could never understand, and yet somehow felt I could.”

It was hard to deny the resemblance. But it was just as clear that they were extremely different.

Alike yet different, beings walking on parallel lines that would never meet. Was that not Chung Myung and Jang Ilso?

β€œAt times I could almost grasp it, as if it were in my hand. What you were thinking, what you were feeling.”

Muttering quietly, Chung Myung stared vacantly down at the red earth that covered Jang Ilso’s corpse.

β€œBut that last expression I saw on your face… No matter how much I think of it, I can’t figure it out.”

It was the final moment of his life.

He had thrown away everything. His life, the things he had built over a lifetime, even what might have been more precious than his life – he had burned it all to reach the end of the road.

At the moment when all of that collapsed, how was Jang Ilso able to smile?

Relief? Self-mockery? Or perhaps emptiness? The petty self-satisfaction of one who had struggled to the end against an insurmountable wall?

To Chung Myung’s eyes, it seemed to be none of them. If it had been a feeling so easy to grasp, Chung Myung would have had no need to come all the way here.

That face in those final moments would not leave his mind. Jang Ilso’s expression, like a brand, kept circling in his thoughts. Perhaps it would remain a question that would never be answered for the rest of his life.

He fixed a heavy gaze on Jang Ilso’s grave.

Before the year is out, this grave will be covered with grass. The ground, raised only slightly if at all, will be hidden by the undergrowth, and worn down by wind and the feet of wild beasts until it grows flat.

And so, before long, no one would be able to find it.

β€œHup.”

Chung Myung rose to his feet.

He wished to leave behind neither ridicule nor pity. He poured the liquor in the bottle, every last drop, over the mound. After staring for a long while at the rough grave, Chung Myung slowly turned away.

β€œThough I may loathe you as a person, I don’t wish to condemn your choice. Once, I too desperately wished for the choice you made.”

Chung Myung knew better than anyone how fierce that struggle was, how painful.

β€œBut listen. There are those in this world who stand against the despair you turned away from. Back then, and now.”

Chung Myung slowly closed his eyes.

Perhaps he himself was unworthy. But even if he were not, there were surely those in this world who were. Those whose β€˜worth’ overflowed beyond measure.

β€œSo watch closely from here. We won’t run away, and we won’t give up. Even if what awaits at the end is destruction, I will fight to the very end.”

Perhaps this was what he had wanted to say.

These were words he could tell no one. Words he could only entrust to someone who would never hear them. Even if that someone had been his enemy.

Chung Myung took a step forward. Just as when he had come here – slow, dragging steps. Nothing had changed.

Step. Step.

His footsteps carried on without hesitation, as though intent on leaving nothing behind.

But then, Chung Myung suddenly turned his head, blankly scanning the empty air.

There was no way – there was no way he could have heard anything – yet a phantom voice brushed past. Puzzlement swept across his face.

What was that? Just now, clearly…

No one, nothing, gave Chung Myung an answer.

After a long while of searching the empty air, Chung Myung took in everything that entered his field of vision, without omitting a single detail. Then he moved his feet again. This time there was no such thing as stopping. Walking slowly without rest, Chung Myung’s figure gradually grew smaller and smaller.

And so, at last, in the empty field where Chung Myung had disappeared, only the harsh scent of liquor spread. The pungent fragrance thickened, then thinned with the wind, and soon scattered as though it had never been there.

All that remained was a faint lingering scent, settling with quiet sorrow.

❀ ❀ ❀

Despite the presence of people, a heavy silence hung in the air. Gazes, cold like icy blades, clashed in midair.

As if glaring into a mirror image of themselves, neither retreating a step, the two who were evenly matched and pressing each other down with their energy moved their hands at the same time… and seized their teacups.

β€œMm.”

β€œHmm.”

As if displeased by the fact that they had grabbed the cups simultaneously, they simultaneously set them down again.

Then, just as at the start, they fell silent, glaring at each other.

The others, sick of this suffocating spectacle, exchanged looks.

β€˜Um, Lee Sohyeop.’

β€˜Yes, Dojang.’

β€˜So then… uh, on one side is the elder brother who tossed aside even the Sect Leader’s order to go rescue his younger brother.’

β€˜Yes.’

β€˜And on the other side is the younger brother who owes his life to that elder brother, right.’

β€˜That’s right.’

β€˜So the two of them seemed to not get along at all, but in truth they actually care for each other deeply.’

β€˜Strictly speaking, it would be closer to say that the one who always seemed to torment the other was, in fact, devoted to his younger brother.’

β€˜Anyway, that’s what it is, isn’t it? That’s why we arranged a meeting like this…’

β€˜Yes.’

β€˜Then why on earth are they doing that?’

Listening to the whispered questions, Lee Songbaek looked again at the two seated facing each other – two men whose very bearing, and even their faces, seemed alike, as if a bronze mirror were set between them.

A curious expression flickered across Lee Songbaek’s face.

β€˜Well. Who knows.’

Lee Songbaek answered with a faint chuckle. For some reason, a very old memory surfaced.

β€˜Aren’t brothers all like that.’

At that moment, the two moved their hands again at the same time and grabbed the teacups set before them.

β€œMm.”

β€œAhem!”

Once more, with uncomfortable expressions, they set the cups down.

β€œβ€¦..This is driving me crazy.”

β€œFeels like they’ve done that more than ten times.”

β€œIt is exactly the thirteenth.”

Wondering whether the two might end up slashing at each other(?), and even if not that, what might erupt between those brothers – the disciples of Hwasan and Jongnam, who had edged on their seats forward out of curiosity, now beat their chests in frustration and let out silent screams.

At that moment, Jin Geumryong, as the elder brother in name at least, was the first to speak.

β€œAre you alright?”

Baek Cheon’s expression turned strange. No, to be precise, it was closer to a grimace.

He knew the words were meant as concern, but hearing such words come out of Jin Geumryong’s mouth with his own ears made it feel as if worms laden with poison were crawling all over his body.

β€œWell……”

And whether that was fortunate or unfortunate, it seemed Jin Geumryong seemed to share the same sense of dread.

β€œSeeing you stabbed by those Sapa bastards and hanging between life and death, I couldn’t help but worry. How did someone like you end up coming from our clan.”

β€œβ€¦What?”

When Baek Cheon flared up and sprang to his feet, Yoon Jong shouted in alarm.

β€œAh, no! Sasuk! You said you were going to thank him! Why are you doing this, for heaven’s sake! A life-saving grace! A life-saving grace!”

β€œβ€¦β€¦Ugh.”

Grinding his teeth hard, Baek Cheon reluctantly sat down again. Hearing Yoon Jong’s words as well, Jin Geumryong let out a snort, a smug look on his face.

β€œSo? What did you call me here for?”

β€œWell……”

Baek Cheon’s face flushed red.

Part of him wanted to flip the low tea table right this instant and storm off, but he had lectured about propriety too many times in front of these people to dare behave so outrageously. In any case, it was a fact that Jin Geumryong had saved Baek Cheon.

Even if it was so mortifying he’d rather bite through his tongue, he couldn’t deny the reality that had already happened.

β€œWell……”

β€œWhat?”

β€œTha……”

Baek Cheon’s voice slipped out like the squeak of an ant.

β€œWhat was that? I can’t hear you well.”

β€œTha…”

Baek Cheon’s face twisted in a ghastly grimace. This was absurd. The words simply refused to leave his throat.

β€œGoing around doing things no one asked you to!”

β€œWhat? Is that what you say to the elder brother who saved your life?!”

β€œWho saved whose life? I could have handled it just fine without you. You only got in the way for nothing!”

β€œThis little…!”

Without either moving first, the two sprang to their feet at the same time and grabbed each other by the collars.

β€œI saved you because you’re still my younger brother, and you get so cocky.”

β€œWho is your younger brother? That bond was cut long ago!”

β€œFine then! Since I saved your life, I’ll take it back again!”

β€œHah! Try it if you can.”

Lee Songbaek and Yoon Jong stared blankly at the scene.

β€œNo.”

β€œBrothers…….”

Watching the gruesome spectacle along with them, Jo Geol miserably dragged both hands down his face.

β€œβ€¦Those damned Jin Clan bastards are hopeless.”

No one could refute Jo Geol’s words.

Congratulations Ellie, what an amazing job you’ve done with these chapters, rarely if at all any instances where the translation was unclear in the slightest. Despite the language changes all the small complexities, jokes and intent even in profound conversations was easily understood always. Great Job

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS ON 1000 CHAPTERS!!!!!

Second, What the hell is Chung Myung talking about?

β€œAt times I could almost grasp it, as if it were in my hand. What you were thinking, what you were feeling.”

Its almost as if the author is implying that Chung Myung agrees to a certain extend that the choice made by Jang Ilso of killing all the Just Sects and becoming the ruler of the central plains was not a horrific thing to try to accomplish. (At least that’s what I’m getting from this whole interaction).

I think it’s less about the moral and more about the determination, the mindset. Whether JI’s ideal was good or not (which they wasn’t), he gave his everything, burned his everything with his own hand to try and reach it. It’s something CM can recognize. Not meaning that he approve of it. Just that it is something he is familiar with, something he saw before, in other circumstance, from other people. (At least it’s what I got myself)

Even if the author intended the message just as you said, it still feels like an action that Chung Myung wouldn’t do with all that we know about him. Chung Myung might recognize the similarities between his past self and Jang Ilso regarding their overwhelming talent and to some extend ambitions, but besides that recognition of similarities, Chung Myung would not show any spec of respect, and these last 2 chapters is a recognition from Chung Myung to Jang Ilso of respect (which for me doesn’t make sense). I might not be getting all the underlying messages the author is trying to give, but to me this situation of Chung Myung showing respect to Jang Ilso makes no sense.

I understand that he is not agreeing with Jang Ilso. But it is certainly weird (at least to me) the amount of respect he has given Jang Ilso in the last 2 chapters. Even the fact that he is still trying to understand him is weird to me.

I’m with you in this one, that bit when CM pays his respects to JIS unsettled me… To me it seems like a detriment to the story (that’s a purely subjective opinion).

But I ended up seeing it as fan service for everyone who used to ship them more than anything (that’s how I always justify to myself all the weirdness in their interactions: “that’s fan service”) which I think it’s okay if it’s purpose is that.

as much as i find it unsettling too, i wouldnt reduce this down to fan service, considering rotmhs isnt that type of novel anyway. Also that biga mentions in one of his qna that sometimes his characters “move on their own”.

Because chungmyung tried warn jang ilsi but he never tried to understand cm and instead kept on a self sabotage till the end, chungmyung probably thought he could become chungmun for him, but how to guide one who can’t be guided? In the end, jang ilso met an unsatisfactory pitiful Ending, sacrificing everything and still dying alone, without even gamyeong, his closest aide whos upported him no matter what.

Meanwhile chungmyung had baekcheon now, and cheongmun back then, as he says here:

β€œBut listen. There are those in this world who stand against the despair you turned away from. Back then, and now.”

Chung Myung slowly closed his eyes.Perhaps he himself was unworthy. But even if he were not, there were surely those in this world who were. Those whose β€˜worth’ overflowed beyond measure.

There was a flashback in this arc too where cm asked cmun why he’s sacrificing mount hua, when those bastards(gupa) will use it to their advantage? But cheongmun stood with his decision to preserve the future. Cm couldnt understand it as he thought they should just preserve themselves (like jang ilso has done now) but trusted cmun in the end.

in this arc, it was chungmyung also blaming himself for what happened to diancang, but baekcheon told him that he didnt agree, and he’ll undo that sin by taking on that depair if he can’t handle it.(~1818)

jang ilso had gamyeong on his side, but he threw him away even though gamyeong reassured him that he would be on ryeonju’s side till the end (1644), the person who would “take on that despair”.

Overall, i think its chungmyung’s reflection , as he sees jang ilso like a “no cheongmun me.” Hes spent a good chunk of novel trying to understand cheongmun, so he sees jang ilso with pity and scorn than understanding. this chapter is about that, in my opinion.

I don’t read it as CM giving respect though. It just feels like he is trying to process his own feelings. No matter what we say, CM and JI had a special bond.

They fought together againt the bishop in a way that asked to trust each other, they could understand part of each other in a way no one did, they are like two side of the same coin, destined to never be on the same side or to see eye to eye, but relating to each other like if part of them is made of the same material, seeing the world in such similar but different ways.

And only at the end did JI see it like CM, found that there was something of worth in this world. And it’s something that happened only because of CM, of the way CM kept on trying to talk to JI when he could have just attacked silently.

In true it’s not out of character for CM to go talk to JI, because it’s something the both of them always did in some form. CM never refused the alcohol JI gave him either, so him being the one to give it to JI in the end feel like closing a loop.

CM having many feelings about the way JI died -by CM’s hands, but of JI’s will- is also understandable. JI wanted to die by CM’s hands, he chose to. How can it mean nothing? How can CM not wonder about the smile JI wore as it happened?

HGM and CM are probably the only ones that saw JI as a human being, and CM is the only one that understood the feelings of the human JI, and he couldn’t help but relate to them for they was feelings he knows.

Aaah, I’m ranting so I will stop here for now. There is just so much about these two.

First time CM brought the alcohol to JI and not the other way around. What a day to be dead!

“As though toasting one who doesn’t exist”
    toasting with one who* ?

This scene was amazing. I’m glad CM’s feelings about the last fight was adressed. I wonder if one day something will happen that will make CM understand the reason why JI smiled.

“As if displeased by the fact that they had grabbed the cups simultaneously, they simultaneously set them down again.”
Oh okay I get who they are. The mirror things should have been enough but I failed to take it literally.

    β€˜Aren’t brothers all like that.’
Songbaek, what?? Do you know other brothers like that?? Do you have a brother?? What did I miss??

These two don’t change do they? Not in that way at least XD Maybe it’s just a different way of getting along. If it can even be called that. They are funny together.

Thank you for translating this chapter Ellie! The great change of tone between the two scenes sure was something, wasn’t it? I liked it tho, going from heavy and emotional to lighthearted and amusing so quickly.

Congratulations and thank you so much for your translation, the death of Jang Ilso hurts me, but I already knew it, I was just waiting. The scene in the tomb just remind me of the photo of relationships within the characters, the owner put Chung Myung and Jang Ilso as soulmates, not really, but they seem to have a conexion and It was really interesting the atention JIS put on CM, and how he did his make up hahah he is a diva.

Thank you again and see you.
