Chapter 1916

I wish it would last. (6)

ROTMHS Glossary || About page

โ€œUugh…โ€

โ€œAgggh.โ€

โ€œI-Iโ€™m gonna dieโ€ฆโ€

As someone once said, the human body is not made of reeds. In other words, it doesnโ€™t snap or bend so easily just because it suffers a little hardship.

However, if that โ€˜littleโ€™ hardship keeps repeating, then no matter how robust the body, something is bound to go wrong.

The disciples of Diancang were now feeling that truth in their very bones.

โ€œC-Crazy bastards. Every last Hwasanโ€™s bastard is insane.โ€

โ€œWho tells someone to climb a cliff carrying a sack of grain heavier than their own body? Does that even make sense?โ€

โ€œExactly!โ€

โ€œRightโ€ฆ It doesnโ€™t make sense. Itโ€™s not supposed to make sense, and yetโ€ฆ.โ€

Solemnly, everyone fell silent for a moment.

The reason they could not refuse, even knowing it was absurd, was all too simple. One of Hwasanโ€™s disciples, who had been quietly watching them complain, had casually hoisted three sacks onto his back and then scaled the cliff in one go without even a safety rope.

And if it had ended there, maybe they wouldnโ€™t have said anything. But that lunatic had even carried the same sacks back down the cliff without a rope, as if possessed by some madness.

Then, looking at them all with concern, he had said this.

– It does seem a bit heavy. Should I go say something and have them lighten the load for you?

There was no way men who called themselves martial artists could have nodded at that.

โ€œโ€ฆ..Still, we really should have just asked him to cut it down.โ€

โ€œWe really should have.โ€

As groans and sighs burst out from all sides, Lee Danhoe, who had been catching his breath alone, gripped his sword and rose to his feet.

โ€œS-Sahyeong?โ€

โ€œBut even so, n-not the swordโ€ฆ!โ€

Lee Danhoe glanced at his fellow disciples and frowned.

โ€œIโ€™m going to train.โ€

โ€œHuh? Train?โ€

His juniors stared blankly up at Lee Danhoe, as if they couldnโ€™t believe what they were hearing.

โ€œYouโ€™re going to train in that condition?โ€

โ€œGot a problem?โ€

โ€œNo, I mean – your body is practically falling apart.โ€

โ€œFrom what Iโ€™ve heard, the training weโ€™re doing now isnโ€™t even a third of what Hwasan used to put themselves through in the past.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆNo way, come on.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s got to be pure exaggeration. How could anyone do that?โ€

Lee Danhoe didnโ€™t bother refuting them. Whether it was exaggeration or the truth didnโ€™t really matter. What mattered was that if they kept only doing what they were told like this, they would never reach Hwasanโ€™s level, not even in a lifetime.

โ€œSo. Youโ€™re saying youโ€™re not going to do it?โ€

When Lee Danhoe asked, everyone suddenly found something else to look at.

Of course they were desperate to grow stronger, but who in their right mind would want to train when their arms and legs wouldnโ€™t even move?

โ€œโ€ฆ.Fine.โ€

Without another word, Lee Danhoe turned and left.

A few of the remaining disciples began muttering under their breath.

โ€œSahyeong is reallyโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œThe enthusiasm is admirable, but isnโ€™t he overdoing it a bit? What if he ends up ruining his body?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not something that can be done in a single day anyway.โ€

Their words, tinged with awkwardness and embarrassment, went in circles meaninglessly.

Just then, one person rose to his feet.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll go and follow Sahyeong to train.โ€

โ€œSaje?โ€

โ€œHey, why would you of all people do that?โ€

โ€œI can still move for now. I guess my body is unusually sturdy.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWell then.โ€

When another stepped out, a few more disciples quietly slipped out after him.

A faint mix of irritation and embarrassment showed on the faces of the disciples who remained.

โ€œHuuuuuf!โ€

With a harsh breath, Lee Danhoeโ€™s sword sliced through the air.

โ€˜Faster.โ€™

The swords of his seniors were nothing like this. As for the swords of his Sasuksโ€ฆ it was shameful to even bring them up in comparison right now.

โ€˜More!โ€™

Diancangโ€™s sword was speed itself. A swift strike that staked everything on piercing through at the utmost limit of speed.

But the sword he saw now with his own eyes was unbearably slow. Diancangโ€™s sword, once so sharp it seemed it could pierce even the sun – where was the subtle profundity of the Sun-Shooting Sword Technique now?

Like thisโ€ฆ could he ever reach it?

What tormented him was not the weariness of his flesh. Nor was it self-contempt for failing to match Hwasanโ€™s in effort.

It was the gnawing anxiety that even if he endured all this training, he might still, through his own inadequacy, lose the purity of Diancangโ€™s legacy.

โ€˜This is nowhere near enough! Faster! Even faster!โ€™

He pierced, and pierced again. Countless times, he pierced through the air.

Yet the sword strike he longed for only drew farther away. The weight of his thoughts and the pressure of failure crushed down on his chest, threatening to tear him apart.

Just then.

โ€œUmโ€ฆ I think you need to relax a little?โ€

โ€œWho is it?!โ€

On reflex, Lee Danhoe thrust his sword towards the direction the voice had come from.

Clang!

The tip of his sword was blocked by a slightly lifted scabbard. Lee Danhoe bit down hard on his lip.

โ€˜Patheticโ€ฆโ€™

Watching anotherโ€™s training was originally a taboo. But even so, nothing could justify lashing out with a blade the moment someone spoke. It was nothing more or less than Lee Danhoe venting his frustration.

โ€œSo I take it that at Hwasan, meddling in another sectโ€™s training isnโ€™t considered taboo?โ€

Even knowing that, what burst out of Lee Danhoeโ€™s mouth was not reflection or apology, but an angry, venomous remark. The moment he bit down hard on the inside of his cheek in quiet regret, a bored reply came back.

โ€œYou could see me just as clearly, so whatโ€™s with the act?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMore importantly, loosen up a little.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHow is your sword supposed to move fast when your whole body is so tense? Youโ€™re just choking yourself with your own strength.โ€

โ€œWhat do you know aboutโ€ฆ!โ€

Lee Danhoe flared up to argue, but the curly-haired man standing before him spoke again in the same indifferent tone.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what martial arts youโ€™re learning, but when it comes to swift sword [์พŒ๊ฒ€(ๅฟซๅŠ)], I know a thing or two.โ€

โ€œWhat are youโ€ฆโ€

Swish!

In that instant, something hard brushed right past Lee Danhoeโ€™s face.

โ€˜Whenโ€ฆ?โ€™

His eyes widened beyond belief. At some point, the curly-haired manโ€™s sword was touching his cheek. The moment he felt the cold of the bladeโ€™s surface, a shiver ran through him as though a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head.

โ€˜My Sasuksโ€ฆ no, is he even faster than them? He might have surpassed them!โ€™

He was certain that manโ€™s sword had been sheathed. He had seen it with his own eyes.

Which meant that the entire process – drawing the sword from the scabbard, pulling it free, and then thrusting it forward again – had all occurred instantly. So brief a moment that Lee Danhoe hadnโ€™t even sensed it.

โ€œH-Howโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhen all youโ€™re full of is the desire to get faster, your wrist and everything else just go stiff, and that actually kills your speed. So, uhโ€ฆโ€

Retrieving his sword, the curly-haired man scratched his head with an awkward expression.

Muttering, โ€˜I almost never have to explain anything to anyoneโ€ฆโ€™, the curly-haired man suddenly let out a small exclamation.

โ€œSo, to put it another way – itโ€™s like a whip.โ€

โ€œSorry?โ€

โ€œA whip is the most flexible weapon there is, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWell, thatโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œBut the tip of a whip moves faster than a sword, doesnโ€™t it?โ€

Lee Danhoeโ€™s expression hardened. The curly-haired man continued.

โ€œIf a whip were made of solid steel, it couldnโ€™t do that. Take a weapon like a three-section staff*, for example – itโ€™s similar to a whip, but it can never match a whipโ€™s speed.โ€

โ€œAhโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œIf you want to get faster, then let go of your strength. Resolve is something you set in your heart.โ€

Listening quietly, Lee Danhoe found himself asking without thinking.

โ€œWho are you, exactly?โ€

โ€œAh, wellโ€ฆโ€

The curly-haired man scratched his cheek again, looking awkward.

โ€œIโ€™m not anyone particularly famous. Iโ€™m Jo Geol, the second generation disciple of Hwasan.โ€

โ€œOne Sword Splitting Light?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHm? You know me?โ€

โ€œKnow you? Of course I do.โ€

One Sword Splitting Light [ilgeombungwang] Jo Geol. One of the famed Five Swords of Hwasan, known throughout the world. On top of that, he was renowned as the fastest user of swift sword among the younger swordsmen.

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s surprising. How do you know me?โ€

Now that he knew the man before him was One Sword Splitting Light, even the last traces of doubt lingering in Lee Danhoeโ€™s mind vanished completely.

Of course, he still didnโ€™t like Hwasanโ€™s swordsmen. He couldnโ€™t like them, and he must not.

But he was here to learn from those very enemies.

โ€œYou said to let go of my strength?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re my senior, so please feel free to speak comfortably.โ€

โ€œI wonder ifโ€ฆ thatโ€™s really all right. Haha.โ€

โ€œBut if I let go of my strength, wonโ€™t the sword fail to go where I intend it to? An arrow thatโ€™s lost its direction is not what Iโ€™m aiming for.โ€

โ€œHmm. Thatโ€™s not really because youโ€™ve let go of your strength. Itโ€™s because your stance has collapsed.โ€

โ€œStanceโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIf you loosen up so much that your lower body wavers, of course you wonโ€™t be able to move in the right direction. Try a thrust.โ€

โ€œLike thisโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHere.โ€

Jo Geol lightly bumped Lee Danhoeโ€™s knee with his own. In an instant, his stance collapsed and Lee Danhoe nearly toppled over.

Flaring up, he hurriedly straightened his body.

โ€œWhat are youโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œSee? I just gave you a little nudge and you were about to fall over.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhen I say relax, I mean donโ€™t put strength where it isnโ€™t needed. Put strength where you should, and let it go where you shouldnโ€™t. Thatโ€™s the essence of swift swordsmanship.โ€

โ€œThen where are we supposed toโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHow would I know that. Obviously.โ€

Doubt welled up in Lee Danhoeโ€™s eyes.

โ€œโ€ฆWhat do you mean, you donโ€™t know? I heard you were a master of a swift sword.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve got Diancangโ€™s sword, donโ€™t you? You must have heard it all countless times already.โ€

For a moment, Lee Danhoeโ€™s expression went blank.

โ€˜Heard it countless times.โ€™

Yes, that was true. He had heard it over and over. From his Master, from his seniors. But why? Why hadnโ€™t he held on to all those words?

Jo Geol shrugged as he spoke.

โ€œThereโ€™s no need to doubt. If youโ€™re a disciple of a prestigious sect, the place you need to reach is already engraved in your body. All you have to do is follow that path.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œGot it?โ€

Having thrown out the question, Jo Geol muttered to himself.

โ€œAh, the way I talk is starting to sound weirdly like Chung Myung. How irritating.โ€

Just then, Lee Danhoe, who had been lost in thought alone, spoke firmly.

โ€œIโ€™ll give it a try. Please watch me.โ€

โ€œHuh? Me? From here on, it feels like Diancangโ€™s finer intricacies are going to start showing, so itโ€™s a bit awkward for me to be watching.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter. Please watch me. If no one inherits it, then this art will simply vanish.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIf youโ€™re going to put it that way.โ€

Lee Danhoeโ€™s sword sliced through the air. Jo Geol, watching him intently, gave guidance that was, unusually for him, quite delicate.

โ€œPay a little more attention to your grip.โ€

โ€œYour wrist is still stiff. Softer.โ€

Meanwhile, Baek Cheon, who had been watching all of this from a distance, spoke in a warm, pleased tone.

โ€œHeheh, Geol, that rascal, has grown a lot. I am, as his Sasuk, feel quite delighted.โ€

โ€œSasuk.โ€

โ€œHm? Why?โ€

โ€œPlease stop biting your nails. Youโ€™re going to draw blood.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆReally?โ€

Baek Cheon pulled his trembling fingers away from his lips.

โ€œTry making your words and actions line up a little.โ€

โ€œA-And youโ€™re not nervous at all?โ€

โ€œWhat good does it do to say it out loud?โ€

After a brief silence, they all shook their heads.

It was Jo Geol, of all people. That Jo Geol could be someone who taught others.

โ€œBut, contrary to our worries, isnโ€™t he being pretty textbook about it?โ€

โ€œAccurate. Polite. Clear.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHe might make a good teacher, you know?โ€

At that evaluation, Tang Soso tilted her head.

โ€œHim?โ€

โ€œWhy? He seems incredibly gentle.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆSasuk, Sahyeongs. Have you, by any chance, set Chung Myung as your standard for what โ€˜teaching someoneโ€™ looks like?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œIf you hold that man up as the standard, there wonโ€™t be a single teacher in the world who doesnโ€™t seem gentle.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ.Huh?โ€

Yoon Jong and Baek Cheonโ€™s faces twisted in an instant. It was true. Without even realizing it, their standards for how to see the world had apparently become warped.

โ€œUghโ€ฆ I should go somewhere and do a full ritual cleansing or something.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIt wonโ€™t come off even from someone like me whoโ€™s gone through a complete transformation. What good would a bath do.โ€

โ€œKeep the depressing talk to a reasonable level, please.โ€

Everyone let out a long sigh. Then they noticed the disciples of Diancang slowly gathering around Lee Danhoe and Jo Geol, who was instructing him.

Baek Cheon smiled faintly.

โ€˜Good.โ€™

It was something neither he nor that rascal Chung Myung could accomplish alone. To lead them properly, they needed the help of their fellow brothers.

โ€œTh-That lunatic. Heโ€™s just straight-up teaching swift sword again. That guyโ€™s lower body is still unstable right now.โ€

โ€œThis wonโ€™t do. We have to stop him.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll go fiโ€ฆ Huh? Gwak Hoeโ€™s already going.โ€

Before they knew it, the disciples of Hwasan were also quietly approaching the disciples of Diancang.

โ€œโ€ฆThat brat, he was tearing his hair out over having shown off too much on the cliff in front of Diancangโ€™s disciples, and now heโ€™s just been hovering around them the whole time.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s got a soft heart that doesnโ€™t match that face of his.โ€

The Five Swords all smiled faintly at the sight. All except Yu Iseol.

โ€œNo. Thatโ€™s not the only reason.โ€

โ€œSago?โ€

โ€œJustโ€ฆโ€

Only then did the corner of Yu Iseolโ€™s mouth twitch slightly.

โ€œHe just canโ€™t leave them alone. It reminds him of the old days.โ€

At that, everyone agreed and slowly nodded.

โ€˜Thereโ€™s still some mutual resentment. But time will take care of that.โ€™

The swordsmen of Hwasan werenโ€™t capable of being truly cruel, and the disciples of Diancang were too desperate.

The very scene he had wished for was unfolding before his eyes. Baek Cheon scratched his cheek.

โ€˜Did that brat Chung Myung ever feel like this in the past too?โ€™

Thinking of Chung Myung, Baek Cheon turned his gaze and, as he always did without thinking, spread out his qi sense [๊ธฐ๊ฐ(ๆฐฃๆ„Ÿ)]. And then, in an instant, his face went pale.

โ€œWhere the hell did that bastard go this time?โ€

โ€œWho? Chung Myung? Heโ€™s probably sleeping on some rooftop somewhere.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think heโ€™s even inside the sect grounds.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhat?โ€

In that moment, everyone, gripped by sudden unease, turned their eyes towards the mountain gate. More precisely, towards the road stretching beyond the wide-open gate, leading down to Hwaeum.

โ€œHa. He has run off again.โ€

โ€œUgh.โ€

Baek Cheon clutched at his hair.

โ€œโ€ฆI just hope he doesnโ€™t cause any trouble.โ€

Of course, the chances of that wish coming true were almost zero – but still, he wished for it with all his heart.

*It was written as โ€˜tenโ€™ section staff, but after googling it – it seems there is no such a weapon? But there is ์‚ผ์ ˆ๊ณค(ไธ‰็ฏ€ๆฃ) – three section staff, which fits the narrative, so I assume it was a typo.

ahhhhww jo gul’s being a good big bro to the dianchang kids๐Ÿฅน

wherever chung myung went, i’m really hoping he gets some alone time to sort any of the unsorted and yet unmentioned things out. Or a good one on one convo with him (and anyone basically๐Ÿ˜ญ) would be a dream come true to me.

yeah I got the same vibe… idk if it was because everyone kept disregarding CM or because we’ve seen him sleeping a lot (which could be just comedy or it could be him still being in the recovery phase after the war) or because CM has been purposefully alienating himself from the rest… we’ll see! I also want to see him reach enlightenment but I think it will be a whiiiiiiile until that happens…

In that sense you’re right ๐Ÿ™‚ I was thinking more about how they talk to him, but maybe that’s just my biased perspective (I want CM to be 100% pampered after everything his done). I guess talking to him in a rough way is their way of showing affection?

imo i donโ€™t think he is alienating himself? he was sleeping on the roofs where anyone can find him, even yu iseolโ€™s rock. he was also always nearby, and eating with everyone. it seems more like he is recovering

Did BC regress to being a kid while Jo Geol got to keep his achieved maturity in the war arc?

Thinking about it, it seems (to me) that amongst everyone only JG kept his character development from the previous arc. At least that’s how it feels in this particular chapter ๐Ÿ‘€

Anyways, I really like this JG! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hmmmm, what will CM’s next move be? I wonder…

I love teacher JG. He’s perfect like that. It reminds me of how CM started teaching, though the circumstances are totally differents, they both are the kind of guys other couldn’t have imagined teaching before it happened.
Thankfully for these kids, JG seems to be nice enough considering what he could have inherited? Or maybe it will show later. But if there is anyone I wouldn’t be surprised to see not inherit CM’s teaching style, it’s actually him.
He has a rude streak sometimes, but he’s actually the one that act the less like a bully in the five sword, excluding his first appearance.
It made me very happy to read it๐Ÿ’–

Gwak Hoe appears so often these days. I am waiting for him in the webtoon.

I don’t care for the Diancang characters but I do want to read Emei sect story.

The girl character gave me hope that Emei will get an audible voice in this story

I find Emei to be so interesting: a martial artist sect of only female monks

However, in the many many Murim books I’ve read, they never get more than a sentence or paragraph.

I hope Hwagwi explores Emei(it’s martial arts and dogma) more than that.
