Chapter 1867

Dying would be easier. (2)

ROTMHS Glossary || About page

โ€œHuffโ€ฆ. โ€œ

Unable to withstand the shock inflicted upon his body, the blood vessels in his eyes burst all at once. His vision blurred so much that he could barely see because of the bleeding inside his eyes, yet even through those eyes Chung Myung could see it clearly.

Dark Plum Sword. His beloved blade, symbolizing the ties between the Tang Clan and Hwasan, was driven into Jang Ilsoโ€™s chest.

A stark white blade embedded through fabric soaked crimson.

Along that razor-sharp edge, the blood of the foremost figure in the Evil Sects dripped down.

That was not all. The feeling transmitted to his fingertips told him – this strike had certainly landedโ€ฆ

But in that instant, Jang Ilsoโ€™s palm slammed like a burning brand against the center of Chung Myungโ€™s chest.

Boooom!

Coughing up blood into empty air, Chung Myung was hurled violently backward.

โ€œHaโ€ฆ ahโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Jang Ilso let out a groan laced with both exhaustion and pain. His pale hand quickly reddened as it pressed tightly against the gaping black wound.

โ€œGughk!โ€

Spitting out blood, Jang Ilso squeezed at the injury on his chest, as if trying to wrench away the pain, and spoke.

โ€œโ€ฆIt hurts, you know.โ€

His brow furrowed deeply. Excruciating pain spread through his entire body. The eyes that would not stop trembling flashed wickedly for a moment.

Gnash.

Jang Ilso spat out a clot of bloody phlegm, bit down hard on his own lips, and continued.

โ€œThat was a bit much, Hwasan Geomhyeopโ€ฆ I truly thought I was going to die.โ€

With great difficulty, Chung Myung pushed himself upright.

โ€œPtoo.โ€

He spat out a large clot of blood and casually wiped the darkened blood from the corner of his mouth with his sleeve. Then he muttered.

โ€œโ€ฆWhat a joke.โ€

Slam!

Planting his sword into the ground to prop himself, Chung Myung somehow forced his trembling body up. Though he swayed as if he would collapse any second, he somehow managed to remain upright. Then, baring bloodied teeth, he smiled brightly.

โ€œYouโ€™d better get used to it early. Itโ€™ll hurt even more when you actually die.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t that right?โ€

โ€œTsk.โ€

Jang Ilsoโ€™s expression subtly twisted.

โ€œEven on the brink of death, you just canโ€™t let go of that bravado.โ€

Looking at Chung Myung, who seemed like he could collapse at any moment, Jang Ilso channeled his energy into his right hand. The visible wounds might make it seem like Jang Ilso had taken the heavier blow, but in truth, Chung Myungโ€™s injuries were far more severe.

That meant he had to press the attack without giving him a chance to breathe – before the bleeding from the sword wound worsened.

Just as Jang Ilso finished calculating his next move and instinctively stepped forward.

Stagger.

His body shook violently. Eyes wide, he looked down at his own legs, dazed.

โ€˜Did I suffer internal injuries?โ€™

He quickly circulated his energy to reassess his condition.

But it wasnโ€™t internal injury. Of course, the sword strike that had pierced his chest was serious, but it was only an external injury [์™ธ์ƒ(ๅค–ๅ‚ท)*] – no more than a gash through his flesh. There was no reason at all he should be suffering internal injuries.

Then why, all of a sudden, were his legs refusing to obey him?

โ€œImpossibleโ€ฆโ€

The tips of Jang Ilsoโ€™s fingers trembled faintly.

โ€˜Am I afraid? Me?โ€™

Crunch!

He grabbed his own knee hard. His fingers dug into his skin, sending a chilling wave of pain through him.

โ€œThisโ€ฆโ€

A brutal sense of humiliation seized Jang Ilso.

He had been through more life-or-death situations than one could count. At times, he had even willingly confronted death itself, prepared to accept his own demise without hesitation.

And now, after all that, his body was freezing up from fear? Ridiculous.

At that moment, devoid of much emotion, Chung Myungโ€™s voice reached his ears.

โ€œYour bodyโ€ฆ cough! Cough! Damn itโ€ฆ.โ€

After cursing, Chung Myung spat out another mouthful of blood and continued speaking.

โ€œโ€ฆLooks like your body isnโ€™t listening to you either.โ€

Jang Ilso gave no reply. He merely glared at Chung Myung with sharp, narrowed eyes.

Chung Myung let out a short snicker.

โ€œWant me to tell you why?โ€

โ€œWhat nonsense are you spouting nowโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œDeath itself is nothing. Weโ€™ve both come far beyond fearing such a trivial thing. Isnโ€™t that right?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou are not afraid of death.โ€

Scrape.

Chung Myungโ€™s sword scraped across the ground.

โ€œWhat is truly frighteningโ€ฆ is the dread that death might prevent you from accomplishing what you must.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThe dread that your end might render everything youโ€™ve achieved meaningless – that anxiety is whatโ€™s holding you back.โ€

Jang Ilso stared blankly at Chung Myung, as if struck on the back of the head.

โ€œโ€ฆAnxiety?โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€

Jang Ilso slowly tilted his head to the side, as though he simply couldnโ€™t grasp what heโ€™d just heard.

โ€œIsnโ€™t that the same for everyone? Who doesnโ€™t know everything ends when they die?โ€

โ€œDoes it?โ€

Chung Myung let out another faint chuckle.

Scrape.

The tip of his sword, tireless, scraped the ground once more.

โ€œThere was a time I lived like you, convinced without a shred of doubt that everything depended on my sword.โ€

At the end of his words, Chung Myung slowly shook his head.

โ€œBut not anymore.โ€

From beneath his swollen eyelids, a calm gaze emerged.

โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve seen them – people whose story doesnโ€™t end with death, those who forge something that will continue after theyโ€™re gone.โ€

After staring at Chung Myung for a long while, Jang Ilso let out a hollow laugh.

โ€œHah. I was wondering what nonsense youโ€™d spew this timeโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œBut do you know?โ€

Chung Myung smiled back at Jang Ilso. Yet the nature of his smile was clearly different from Jang Ilsoโ€™s.

โ€œYouโ€™ve already failed.โ€

A sharp twitch ran across the corners of Jang Ilsoโ€™s eye.

โ€œFailed?โ€

โ€œYes. Because you will leave nothing behind.โ€

Chung Myung slowly nodded, then found himself laughing again. Strangely, quiet chuckles kept slipping out of him.

Everyone has something they must achieve at all costs. To reach that destination, theyโ€™d sacrifice anything. But once that desperately desired goal is accomplished, whatโ€™s left afterward?

โ€œThere is nothing there.โ€

Chung Myung laughed bitterly. With each shudder of his body, darkened blood gushed out from the holes pierced through his flesh.

โ€œNothingโ€ฆ nothing at all. All that awaits is just emptiness.โ€

He had been there before.

Cutting off the Heavenly Demonโ€™s head – Chung Myung had once devoted himself entirely to that single goal, even more desperately and ruthlessly than Jang Ilso now.

Yet in the final moment, all that remained in Chung Myungโ€™s grasp was regret, and regret alone.

โ€œWhat matters isnโ€™t what you accomplish, but what you leave behind.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut you probably wouldnโ€™t understand no matter how I put it.โ€

Chung Myung chuckled softly again.

– No matter what I say, what could reach you as you are now?

The way Chung Myung looked at Jang Ilso now could hardly differ from how Chung Mun once looked at Chung Myung.

One who is โ€˜consumedโ€™ can neither see nor leave anything behind.

That was why Chung Myung saw his own past in Jang Ilsoโ€™s figure now. Their destinations differed, but their methods were essentially the same.

But at the very leastโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€˜What you leave behind,โ€™ is it.โ€

At that moment, Jang Ilso looked up at the dark clouds filling the sky. Reaching out his hand as if to grasp the falling rain, he suddenly laughed quietly.

โ€œYouโ€™re joking, right?โ€

Fwoosh.

Suddenly, Jang Ilsoโ€™s body stretched like taffy**, surging towards Chung Myung. Chung Myung reflexively tried to swing his sword, but his wounded body refused to obey his will.

Boom!

His half-hearted swing was effortlessly deflected by Jang Ilsoโ€™s fist.

Kwaaang!

A moment later the left fist that came flying buried itself in Chung Myungโ€™s solar plexus up to the wrist.

โ€œGah!โ€

Unable to bear the shock and pain, Chung Myungโ€™s mouth gaped wide. Jang Ilso instantly kicked Chung Myung, whose body had reflexively doubled over.

Booom!

With a thunderous crash Chung Myung was hurled backward, yet Jang Ilso did not allow him the slightest chance to escape. He snatched Chung Myungโ€™s wrist as he recoiled and yanked him straight back, then gripped the back of his head and drove it towards the ground.

Boooom!

โ€œKkโ€ฆ.โ€

Chung Myungโ€™s body convulsed.

โ€œWhat will you leave behind?โ€

Booom!

Jang Ilso smashed Chung Myungโ€™s head down again. He then grabbed him by the collar and pulled him up, causing Chung Myungโ€™s limp body to appear as if he knelt before him.

โ€œWhat you leave behind, you say? Hahahahahaha! Isnโ€™t that hilarious! Ahahahahahaha!โ€

Jang Ilso burst into manic laughter. Blood trickled down his pale face, streaming down like tears. After laughing for some time, he roughly jerked Chung Myungโ€™s collar, pulling his face right up to his own.

Jang Ilsoโ€™s mad eyes glared at Chung Myung from point-blank range.

โ€œHow naive.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œA person can never truly know anotherโ€™s heart. They merely assume what it would be like and take comfort in that assumption, because otherwise the anxiety would consume them.โ€

โ€œJang Il…โ€

โ€œLeave something behind? Trust someone other than myself? Believe my will shall be carried on? Believe others will do what I could not? Believe? Trust? Someone else?โ€

Chung Myungโ€™s body trembled slightly.

It shouldnโ€™t have been possible, yet in that instant Chung Myung felt himself completely overwhelmed by Jang Ilso for a brief moment.

โ€œTrust?โ€

Booom!

Kicked hard once more, Chung Myung was flung away and rolled across the ground.

โ€œTrust? Itโ€™s nothing but a petty trick, a comforting lie concocted by those worthless pigs who canโ€™t accomplish anything on their own.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThose who can achieve greatness by themselves never speak of trust. Only incompetent fools hide behind such empty words.โ€

With trembling hands, Chung Myung pushed himself painfully up from the ground. Jang Ilso watched the effort with a strange look.

โ€œYou, of all people, should know, shouldnโ€™t you?โ€

Hostility surged in his eyes – and yet, there was also an unfathomable depth of faith in those eyes.

Reading this clearly, Chung Myung let out a faint laugh. To call it a laugh was generous – it was merely a slight twitch on his ravaged face.

โ€œโ€ฆYes. I know.โ€

Now even his hands would no longer obey him, yet Chung Myung forced his body upright again.

Crunch.

Gathering the last of his strength, he gripped his sword firmly.

โ€œI know exactlyโ€ฆ how damn wretched it is.โ€

His body was at its worst, yet for some reason hollow laughter kept escaping him.

โ€œSo, Iโ€™ll tell you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat?โ€

โ€œThat the one who says trust is worthless is merely someone who hasnโ€™t yet stood at the very end.โ€

He should have trusted a little more.

In his final moments, Chung Myung had resented Chung Mun. Heโ€™d blamed Chung Munโ€™s blind trust and naive kindness.

But the Chung Myung of now resents the self he was back then.

Why couldnโ€™t he trust a little more? Why didnโ€™t he try a little harder to help him?

If he had, maybe things would have turned out differently. Maybe he wouldnโ€™t be standing here now, like some lingering wraith, trapped in this place.

Hooโ€ฆ

Chung Myung slowly steadied what little inner energy he had left.

โ€˜How much do I have left?โ€™

Then again, whatโ€™s the use of such things now?

All that was left was to bring him down. Use every last ounce of strength he had. After that, the rest would be up to them.

As Chung Myung took a deep breath, making his final preparations, Jang Ilso spoke.

โ€œTrust, huhโ€ฆ Yeah, perhaps you might be right.โ€

Chung Myung narrowed his eyes – not because the words surprised him, but because he caught the faint spark in Jang Ilsoโ€™s face as he spoke.

โ€œBut that thing you call trust – itโ€™s a word you can only use when thereโ€™s someone to give it to, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat?โ€

An unknown unease swept through Chung Myungโ€™s chest, and before he knew it – forgetting even his resolve not to – his gaze shifted towards the spot a little way off, the place Jang Ilso had been watching since moments ago.

โ€œAnswer me.โ€

The instant Jang Ilsoโ€™s voice brushed his ears, Chung Myung saw it.

A red tide surging towards them from the far end of the earth, the ground stained black by darkness.

โ€œAhโ€ฆ..โ€

A groan, half sigh and half lament, slipped from Chung Myungโ€™s lips. Even from this distance, there was no mistaking what they were.

Jang Ilsoโ€™s hounds were racing towards their master in a mad frenzy.

โ€œIf everyone dies and disappears, then where will your trust go?โ€

Jang Ilsoโ€™s laughter-tinged voice pierced the frozen Chung Myung with merciless cruelty.

โ€˜Noโ€ฆโ€™

Red Dogs, another name for despair, were rushing in.

*์™ธ์ƒ(ๅค–ๅ‚ท) – physical injuries that are visible or affect the exterior of the body. It doesnโ€™t mean โ€œsuperficial,โ€ it means itโ€™s a flesh wound like a stab, a slash etc. On the other hand, in martial arts context, ๋‚ด์ƒ(ๅ…งๅ‚ท) – internal injury – refers to the injuries to dantian(s) and the meridians. The longer a fight drags on, the more these internal injuries interfere with the flow of qi, worsening the damage within the body. So Jang Ilso isnโ€™t saying that the wound is shallow, or not life threatening (he mentions he can bleed out basically so he should attack faster), he is saying this is just not as bad as having an injury to the qi circulatory system.

even at this juncture, more power ups for Sapa?! I don’t get it, is biga planning to have Sapa take over as the protagonists now and the story becomes their fight with heavenly demon cult, there is literally no one else that could come and save the righteous sects now. Cheonumaeng were already all engaged in this battle, other righteous sects were decimated.

some random faction like Potala?! We’ve already seen blood cult and sun palace (allied with Sapa), ice palace and beast palace (allied with cheonumaeng). Diancang i guess hasn’t been mentioned in a while, otherwise there is really no other factions left. A completely out of nowhere intervention by the empire/government?!

โ€œthere is literally no one else that could come and save the righteous sects nowโ€ – um. im still waiting for kunlun to come, who replied in the letters to beop jong back on yangtze that they would come. considering how much time has passed they are probably crawling from all the way there.

also hye bang with the remaining members of shaolin can come. and diancang can join cheonumaeng.

i just donโ€™t understand how the โ€œeliteโ€ unit, while the word elite implies itโ€™s not infinite in numbers, becomes literally infinite in numbers in this novel. they were supposed to be the strongest of the sapas, how could there be SO MANY of them, i do not understand.

That’s definitely the cover art scene there…

I liked this chapter. It pissed me off that the Red Dogs showed up but it makes sense they did so. Im Sobyeong predicted that behavior all those chapters ago. They would drop everything on the spot to secure JIS’s safety.

Those “final preparations” Chung Myung was thinking about sounded an awful lot like he was preparing himself for martyrdom ๐Ÿฅบ I hope that wasn’t foreshadowing.

I liked the comparisons with and mentions of Chung Myung’s past life, it was good insight and hopefully it was therapeutic for CM. No one has made CM reflect on his past life more than JIS (I think), thanks to JIS being a reflection of his past ways.

And I can’t believe what I’m about to say but I finally can relate to JIS about something lol! After all this time, Biga managed to write something relatable about JIS ๐Ÿ˜ถโ€๐ŸŒซ๏ธ I’m talking about his experience with anxiety. Yeah, sometimes anxiety feels like that. But I guess JIS snapped out of it right away ?

    Thanks Ellie โœจ

i have a feeling that CM got injured too much which makes him start to delirium and laugh a lot. if we get to see the red dogs get out of the forgotten land, then it also means that IT’S TIME FOR THE OTHERS TOO TvT

btw, for the closest we get to the cover, i think it’s just a teaser and we’ll get to see the real one later cause CM got three spears(?) plunged into his back TT^TT. if my guess is wrong then it’s just my delusion of sth better still waiting ahead.

there is no gaping wound on jis chest on the novel cover so itโ€™s already not accurate! there is also smth that looks like a trident in cm back, but surochae isnโ€™t even on the battlefield, they were destroyed and not mentioned again. so.. this is probably the closest we get.

haban just did a good thing drawing it like this, while biga chickened out and made jis hold cm by the collar and not by the hair.

I honestly donโ€™t get it! Why are the Saba forces endless? Isnโ€™t the righteous faction supposed to have more people? Why do they vanish so easily?? Jang Ilso once said itโ€™s easy to find strong fighters in the righteous factions, but rare in the evil one โ€” yet here, the Saba are infinite, and they have tons of strong warriors! And now the Red Dogs are coming in like a tidal wave?! Despite all these back-to-back wars, they just never run out??And when the sword pierces Jang Ilso, itโ€™s just a scratch โ€” but Chung Myung gets wounded and it feels like heโ€™s already one step in the grave! Seriously, I hate this over-exaggeration of the villainโ€™s power. Itโ€™s just too much!

Many red dogs have already died, but there are more?!! This isn’t fair! The sword was pierced into Jang Il Soo’s chest, but it was just an “external injury” while Chung Myung is in a pitiful state!! It seems that Saberon’s forces are endless; they keep pouring in. In contrast, the Fair Sects are very few!! This chapter makes me feel uneasy! Chung Myung can’t take it anymore. I wish someone would step in and help him! Also, I still want to know what happened to Baek Chun and the others.

I’m a fan of comprehensive detail in novel writing but now I just feel the author is dragging this.

each chapter ends with a decisive victor, then the start of the next chapter completely obliterates the victor’s merit and ends with victor now a loser and the former loser a victor.

it’s making the fight ambiguous and eliminating all other aspects. This is a war, not a two man fight.

this is why i rly enjoyed the haenam arc. the whole stand off and chase were well written.. and the emotions i felt for chung myung were gut wrenching. there were descriptions of his pain and suffering and his inner thoughts and turmoil. but now it seems we just get a repetitive dialogue after another repetitive dialogue..

so true, the Herman arc was something, it had character development and progressive storytelling.

though the one thing I will always give Biga, is the man knows how to twist. Damn, you never see his twists coming.

ohhh so this is what cm meant when he thought of himself n cmun at gamyeongs death….i always wondered how the relationships paralleled, but now it finally makes sense. Jis is pbss then hg is cmun. And hg dying without resentment is even sadder now TT jis is really pbss 1:1 , quite narrow-minded because his achievements deceive him.

    also,

โ€œA person can never truly know anotherโ€™s heart. They merely assume what it would be like and take comfort in that assumption, because otherwise the anxiety would consume them.โ€

see, chungmyung said the same thing back in sword tomb!! But chungmyung evolved and matured, over the past ~1700 ch. in the end, your circumstances dont define you, but how you choose to be.

Im shocked red dogs are alive. I thought they were dead =-=

โ€ŽI am writing with a translator, so please forgive the mistakes right away. I do not write comments, please forgive me, although I am following the novel very closely. But even my nerves are giving in here..โ€ŽI was thinking about this the other day when I was rereading the novel from the beginning, that so many beautiful words were said throughout all the chapters and it would be very sad, but also beautiful, if they did not come true… Chong Myung is too self-confident in places, although he tries to show the opposite, consciousness and perception are not so easy to change, and remembering his dialogue with the past Head of the Beggars’ Sect, the events now are especially painful to perceive. He constantly talks about strength, about camaraderie, about support, and goes along a path different from the Huashan path from the past, but this is never enough, a lot of words, a lot of lyricism, a lot of hope, and this does not come true because of circumstances, because of the people around, each of whom is unique and looks at the world differently. even his attempts to remain logical and cool during the Sapa attack on Anhui (not sure if that’s the right spelling) when Yun Jung and Namgun Dovi led the troops to defend. Chung Myung surrendered to them, I think, because he still doesn’t think like a commander in chief who takes all the weight of responsibility, but like a Taoist with a sword who must defend, like he was in the past.โ€ŽI love Chun Myung, Baek Jong and everyone in the alliance with all my heart, but at this point a bad ending seems the most realistic. It will be tragic, but on the other hand, with Biga’s good delivery, it will become such a clear emphasis on all the important ideas in the novel. They talk about righteousness, about honesty, about support, while we have repeatedly seen moments opposite to this, and Biga wrote about disagreements in the ranks, in the text there are separate moments of indignation and misunderstanding on the part of the other members of the sects, except for the main characters. Human vices are revealed, self-confidence against the background of won battles, misunderstanding and failure to take into account all the mistakes of the past, the inability of one single person to lead a motley army with one structure and problems with establishing control due to figures of an older, respected age and status, because of which in places everything stumbles. yes, i remember the disgusting scene of baek jung’s expulsion, which emphasized chung myung’s formal status, shifted the imbalance of student power in huashan and instilled many negative thoughts in the minds of others. and the moments when the five of swords were not allowed to act, condemned the actions of already status figures due to prejudices of age and experience :/โ€Žin short, jong myung is trying, but he is one person, no matter how he paved his way, and he cannot save everything himself. unlike jang ilso, who took everything by force, and in addition to time to build up his personal strength, he simply subjugated the rest of the personal forces of sap, leaving no room for questions and disputes. therefore, he has a reserve, although it is a little sucked out of a finger by Biga’s defense, and jong myung brought out all the forces of the alliance. I will cry for many days if everything ends with the death of our heroes, but the sudden plot defense will also upset…โ€ŽSorry for such a large amount of text. and confusion in places. I tried to fit all the thoughts I had into one chapter. Thank you so much for the translation. This is what saves me these days.

    Where are our โ€œexpertsโ€?

While Jang Ilso has many more warriors compared to the just sects, we are supposed to have more experts than him. But the author forgot about this fact and it seems like Jang Ilso has unlimited warriors and many more experts compared to the just sects.
Who else besides the remnants of Shaolin can come and help in this situation? I hope the author didnโ€™t take inspiration from Akame ga Kill and decides to kill everyone.

so, I had to go back and check because I was confused and yeah, red dogs were there alongside the cultists when JIS first met Tang Soso and the boys… so these red dogs are either the ones who were in the battlefield (abandoned the battlefield to save Ilso) or the ones who were scattered posing as “JIS” to divide cheonumaeng or completely new ones idk

also when JIS and CM were talking before he fight, they did say that Hwasan rushed to reach JIS as they were the only ones with the physical condition to do so, while the rest of cheonumaeng were left behind… they should be arriving at any moment… right?

anyways, that kinda explains the numbers (kinda)… it feels like we have fewer people than them because we’re just Hwasan, not the entire cheonumaeng

โ€œYou, of all people, should know, shouldnโ€™t you?โ€
So JI means he trusts CM to know? It is kind of amusing how he says โ€œA person can never truly know anotherโ€™s heart. They merely assume what it would be like and take comfort in that assumption, because otherwise the anxiety would consume themโ€, and yet is so confident he can read CM. I wonder if he himself realize the contradiction.

“But the Chung Myung of now resents the self he was back then.”
Maybe we could just… not resent anyone? Pretty please?

I wonder if they are new Red Dogs, or the ones that ran away earlier (on order) that was told to come back once the situation worsen for Cheonumaeng or something like that๐Ÿค”

Looks like JI will truly die without ever getting that character development. Can’t say it’s surprising, however it is kind of pitiful…๐Ÿ˜”

Thank you for the translation Ellie, I loved reading this chapter so much!!๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–

Honestly, this part of the story is getting boring, it feels like the author is dragging his feet to kill Jang Ilso, he’s always trying to find a twist, it feels like the enemy is always superior, it’s almost annoying.
