Chapter 1876

Who I was in the past and who he will become in the future. (1)

ROTMHS Glossary || About page

His mind was hazy. A sense of weightlessness, as if drifting in deep water, enveloped his whole body. He wanted nothing more than to close his eyes and sink forever into eternal sleep.

But Chung Myung forced his eyes open.

Through his blurred vision, he saw a sky full of dark clouds.

‘My limit…’

His body had already surpassed its limits. All that remained was sheer willpower.

He had always thought that alone was enough. His will had always been extraordinary. In fact, he had never given up even once until now.

But… was that really true?

Perhaps he had simply never been allowed to give up.

If Chung Myung lost, everyone lost. If he gave up, everything ended. If he turned away, someone died.

He took all these burdens as a matter of course. He had to. There had been no other choice. And so, it was alright. He could endure it.

But… had he really been alright?

Suddenly, a flash of vivd blue filled Chung Myung’s vision. Instinctively, he twisted his body.

Boooom!

The ground where Chung Myung had just been lying exploded with a deafening roar. The shock reverberated through his back.

“Gah!”

A metallic taste filled his mouth as blood welled up from his throat.

He felt as if he’d already spat out everything within him, yet apparently, there was still blood left to spill – just like this stubborn, unyielding life that refused to end.

Whooosh!

Three streams of energy. More precisely, three rings charged with energy came flying at Chung Myung’s head and chest. He hastily swung his sword to deflect the oncoming rings.

Clang! Clang!

The moment sword and rings collided, a cracking sound echoed inside his body. It was the sound of the bones in his wrist fracturing. His body, pushed past its limits, could no longer withstand even a blow like this.

Just then, something shot towards Chung Myung from the front – a hand wrapped in blazing blue flames. It was Jang Ilso’s claw [조(爪)], shaped like the talons [발톱 – usually of birds of prey] of a divine beast [신수(神獸)], slicing downward towards Chung Myung.

‘The sword…’

He could no longer move his sword.

The plum blossom sword, which had always moved according to Chung Myung’s will, now felt as immovable as a mountain – no matter how hard he tried, it wouldn’t budge.

Chung Myung stared blankly at Jang Ilso’s hand flying towards him, as if it were someone else’s problem. A sudden question flashed through his mind:

Why should he continue struggling?

He had done enough. He had genuinely given everything he could. Was it truly meaningful to keep desperately fighting just to prolong this endless suffering?

But at that very moment, a familiar voice pierced through Chung Myung’s ears.

“Chung Myuuuuuung-aaaaaaaah!”

As if that familiar cry had been a signal, Chung Myung’s dimming eyes reignited with fierce resolve.

‘My sword won’t move?’

So what?

Chung Myung knew.

Someone who had fought despite losing an arm. Someone who had fought even after losing their internal energy. Someone who, having lost every means of proving oneself, instead of surrendering, had charged forward even more fiercely.

With someone like that behind him, how could he possibly allow himself to whine?

Chung Myung let go of the sword he’d been gripping. Then, with his now free hand, he drew crimson plum blossoms in mid-air.

Plum Blossom Scattering Hand [매화산수(梅花散手)].

Though it was a plum blossom drawn by hand and not by sword, it was just as beautiful as anything he’d created with his blade.

Boooom!

Jang Ilso’s blue energy collided with Chung Myung’s crimson energy.

Crack!

Their hands, piercing through the clashing energies, intertwined in mid-air. In the same instant, as both gripped each other’s hand with all their strength, Chung Myung’s foot shot out like lightning and struck Jang Ilso square in the solar plexus.

Boooom!

Crack!

A tremendous explosion and the sound of something breaking resounded at the same time. Jang Ilso was thrown away like a cannonball, crashing violently into the ground.

“Cough.”

Chung Myung let out a dry cough. Soon after, with a detached expression, he glanced down at his right hand. Without hesitation, he grasped his twisted fingers, bent grotesquely out of shape.

Crack.

A chilling sound escaped. The blood-red fingers turned black in an instant, but without so much as a blink, Chung Myung twisted each broken finger back into place.

Snap.

Then he gripped his sword once more.

His hand was so shattered and bruised that it was hardly even a hand anymore, but now it no longer defied his will. As Chung Myung raised his sword, he slowly licked his lips.

Jang Ilso, still sprawled on the ground, thrust a hand up towards the sky.

“Hmm.”

Tap.

Ruffling his own hair carelessly with that hand, Jang Ilso chuckled softly and raised his upper body.

“Where did you pull that strength from? I thought you were as good as dead.”

Rustle.

The sound of Jang Ilso’s robes brushing against his body rang out with disturbing clarity.

Anyone watching Jang Ilso slowly rise could tell: unlike Chung Myung, who had surpassed his limits and abandoned even the thought of tomorrow, Jang Ilso still had strength to spare.

Strong.

Chung Myung acknowledged it without hesitation.

That man was strong. It was no excuse to say that he hadn’t regained his former prowess. Even if Maehwa Geomjon himself stood here instead of Chung Myung, he wouldn’t be able to deny how strong Jang Ilso was.

And so, it was clear.

With this ragged body, Chung Myung could never defeat Jang Ilso. It wasn’t resignation – it was simply the reality.

Jang Ilso slowly swept his fallen hair aside, his voice chilling as he muttered.

“Just when I think I’ve killed you, you come back to life. Just when I think I’ve broken you, you somehow recover once more.”

Jang Ilso glanced towards Baek Cheon in the distance.

“I’m getting sick of it. You’re all so disgustingly persistent.”

“…”

“Why? Did seeing your dear senior return from the dead give you strength you never had?”

Jang Ilso looked at Chung Myung, his face contorting as he let out a twisted smile.

“Stop dreaming already. Didn’t I tell you? In the end, everyone stands alone.”

Chung Myung silently gazed at Jang Ilso. For a fleeting moment, the figure of his past self overlapped with the man standing before him.

Yes, perhaps what Chung Myung was seeing… was his own reflection.

A version of himself who had not been abandoned at Hwasan Sect, who therefore never met anyone from Hwasan, who survived alone without ever finding a guiding light.

Someone who, unable to find a back to follow, fed solely on his own desires and clawed his way up to this place. That Chung Myung, who never found the shade of Hwasan, stood over there.

Bitterly noble and aloof.

That’s why he was strong. He had no choice but to be strong. But…

“How empty.”

At Chung Myung’s words, Jang Ilso’s eyes twitched faintly.

“You still don’t get it? Miracles don’t happen twice. Maybe that pitiful man has already used up all the luck you had left.”

“Luck…”

Chung Myung let out a brief laugh.

“Thanks to you, I understand now.”

“…Hmm?”

“…Complete transformation [탈태(奪胎)*].”

Chung Myung continued in a detached voice.

“Sudden enlightenment, or shedding one’s shell, seeking the truth, ascending to immortality…**”

“…What nonsense are you spouting?”

“They all call it what they like, as they please. In the end, it’s all the same.”

“…”

“What you long for and yearn for, what you desire with all your heart – when that is finally realized in your own flesh, that is complete transformation.”

Jang Ilso’s gaze darkened slightly.

“All streams return to the source [만류귀종(萬流歸宗)]. Such obvious words…”

“Wrong.”

Chung Myung cut him off firmly.

“In Buddhism, life is seen as suffering. But to reach enlightenment, one must endure that suffering.”

“…”

“That’s why Buddhism wishes for this: a body as unyielding as Vajra [금강(金剛) symbol of a diamond and thunderbolt], a mind that will not waver like a candlelight in the wind, able to withstand the discipline of suffering.”

Jang Ilso let out a groan.

“…The Indestructible Vajra Body [금강불괴(金剛不壞)].”

“Taoists seek to become one with the world. Not artificially, but as they are, as part of nature itself. They yearn endlessly for their bodies to harmonize completely with nature. In Taoism, a body that attains such a state is called a ‘natural body***.’”

“…”

“And in the secular world, people lament the years that have passed. They do not believe in what comes after, so they long for bodies that can grant them more time in this life. Simply put, youth.”

“…Rejuvenation [환동(還童)], then.”

Jang Ilso murmured as if entranced. Chung Myung slowly nodded.

“Though the endings may differ, the source is the same. An earnest wish transforms the body, slowly – or sometimes with the sudden rush of a torrent.”

Jang Ilso scoffed at what he’d heard.

“So, the moment one gains enlightenment, the transformation that had been held back due to insufficient realization bursts forth all at once. Is that the true nature of transformation and rebirth?”

“That’s right.”

“An amusing notion.”

Jang Ilso glanced again towards Baek Cheon. He couldn’t fully accept it, but there was certainly no other way to explain his recovery.

“Fine. Let’s say you’re right. But… why are you telling me all this?”

“What about you?”

“…What?”

“I’m asking about your body. To reach your current level, how did you change yourself?”

Faced with the unexpected question, Jang Ilso frowned.

“What are you…?”

“When I look at your body, covered in scars, that’s what I can’t help but wonder.”

Jang Ilso stared at Chung Myung, a look of utter incomprehension on his face.

“You’re full of contradictions.”

“…”

“And so am I.”

Chung Myung let out a quiet chuckle.

If Jang Ilso had truly wished for a flawless body, his scars would have vanished long ago. But Jang Ilso never desired perfection for himself.

It was the same for Chung Myung.

Had Chung Myung truly wished to become his fully matured self, his body would have long since regained its past form. Yet he remained smaller than he had once been.

Through this irony, he finally understood a truth even he hadn’t realized himself.

‘I just wanted to remain as I was.’

With his eyes closed, Chung Myung spoke quietly to himself.

“I’ve lived my whole life preparing for what’s to come.”

“What are you talking about…”

“But more than anyone, I’ve always been afraid of tomorrow. No matter how much I tried to fool myself, it was useless. Nothing terrified me more than seeing the days pile up, one after another.”

Afraid that the time he had now would someday lead to losing everything.

“That’s why I could never stop being a child. Because I wished for it so desperately.”

Chung Myung sneered.

“But… it can’t last forever. Eventually, tomorrow comes. Even if completing myself means calling forth ‘him,’ I cannot keep myself locked away forever.”

Now, at last, he understood the meaning of the Dalai Lama’s words.

Why was it that just sensing that man’s presence was enough to push Chung Myung to the brink of demonic possession [입마(入魔)]?

“Are you just going to keep spouting nonsense? I’m starting to get bored.”

Jang Ilso’s expression twisted slightly. His mind was in turmoil.

‘What is this?’

In his heart, he was already lunging at Chung Myung, unleashing attacks. But strangely, his body refused to move. His instincts were warning him. He must not approach that man right now.

With his eyes closed, Chung Myung spoke slowly.

“So now it’s time to accept it. In the end, I have to face it.”

“…”

“Who I was in the past.”

And the completion that would bring forth…

“And who he will become in the future.”

The wind blew.

Nothing had changed. Even so, Jang Ilso felt it.

“You…”

The color drained completely from Jang Ilso’s face.

Slowly, just as he had done when he closed them, Chung Myung opened his eyes.

In that instant, Jang Ilso, seized by a chilling aura, unconsciously took a step back.

An intense sense of incongruity flooded him. The person he’d been fighting just moments ago was clearly the same, yet appeared completely different. It felt as though someone else had put on that man’s skin, filling Jang Ilso with suffocating unease.

“What on earth…?”

Crack.

Chung Myung clenched and loosened his shattered fingers, then muttered to himself.

“What a complete mess. But… it’s just perfect for now.”

At last, Chung Myung’s gaze turned fully to Jang Ilso. At that familiar yet foreign look, Jang Ilso flinched faintly.

“I’ll let you see it with your own eyes. The world of a hundred years ago.”

Wooooooong!

The Dark Plum Sword erupted with a sword cry that sounded like a scream.

Finallyyyyyyy😭❤️ one of the best chapter I really need to throw a party for seven days . But I didn’t understand what you meant. Does his previous body mean his previous energy or the body in the literal sense? I’m looking forward to Monday’s chapter 🥲..thx ellie 🥰

the word is “body,” as u can see there is no mention of the word energy in this sentence. biga uses the word 육신 which literally means “flesh,” “physical body made out of flesh.”

He was talking about regaining his mature body. Did he mean his old body or his inner energy? Maybe because of the translation, my words are not clear 🥲💔

this is just my interpretation, so feel free to criticize however you want, but i think rather than his old body, what he meant was that ”perfect body” he could have had all these years. like how he always said ‘if only i had the same body (and power) i had 100 years ago.”

baekcheon reached this perfect body state when he faced his death. and jang ilso managed to have a perfectly built body and mind because he needed it to fulfill his lifelong dream.

it was the will and desperation that brought them to that state. but in cheongmyeong case, even though he really wanted to get his once-so-strong-body, in deep down he desperately wanted to stay as a child. as someone weak.

because while unlocking that form lets him deal more easily with the chaos that will arise, it also kinda highlights the reality that the chaos WILL arise. and fearing that he would once again see that terrible scene with his own eyes, cheongmyeong subconsciously gave up on reaching his best form and settled for remaining a “child.” because in that way, he could fool himself into believing that a tomorrow in need of his powerful, ever so strong body would never come.

maybe that is way the inner demons appeared. because with cheonma’s comeback, all the lies he had told himself began to disappear and the truth he feared the most came to the surface again.

so, this is also why he had to confront the truth he ran away from all this time. because he Needs to get stronger. even though he’s still so afraid of those tomorrows and the future.

who knows, maybe this war and facing jang ilso will be the last steps in his progress toward realization, leading eventually to his enlightenment.

The speech is wonderful, but add to it that he has now achieved mental balance and got rid of the inner demon and perhaps controlled the transformation of his body until he killed Ilso, because the day the bishop was killed, he also controlled his meditative state.

this phrase is addressed to both cm and cheonma.

it can be interpreted as “him” in the future – as chung myung says about himself in third person.

or he can be saying it regarding cheonma as “him” coming back after the completion

My own interpretation is that he is talking about Geomjon, or the past of himself he could never accept until now. But it’s true it’s also wouldn’t be surprising if next chapter or one of the next ones had a short Cheonja-ma’s pov feeling CM’s enlightenment. I just don’t think CM would necessarily think Cheonja-ma would be awaken by that, so it’s why I don’t think he is refering to him but to his past self🤔

    Ahhh now I get it

it is not that he cannot kill jang ilso, it is that cm must accept his past self before killing jang ilso, what cm hated the most was not jang ilso, itwas his past self, all that self loathing, afraid of accepting his past failures

I think now he as accepted his past delft to transform to his future self he can kill jang ilso without worry of the buddhas word

For a sec I thought he mean Geomjon, but now I’m hesitating with UG and BC.

So, what I get is, enlightenment will makes him taller? PlEaSe NO-

Well, I sure hope the Heavenly Executioner isn’t watching because otherwise he will see the world of a hundred years ago too and I don’t think it would be good….
Anyway CM really gave JI enough hints to figure out the true. Maybe nothing will come out of it considering it’s not the best of time for JI to brainstorm about what CM is being cryptic about, but I have to admit I woudn’t be surprise anymore if he did end up figuring it.

Accepting his past self is probably a good thing? But he said he’s close to Demonic Possession, so I have to wonder. And BC is probably still coming for CM so it probably means he still has a role to do in helping him. Maybe CM needs to accept both who he was but also who he is now and everything that come with that? Not sure.

Thank you for the translation Ellie!! That was amazing! I hope your day started as amazingly as mine just did thanks to you!!💖💖💖💖🥰🥰🥰💖💖💖💖

ugh.. but i actually think cheonsal is watching? because he left his cultists and he is most likely lurking.

he had already accepted it in the end of the chapter? the himself of the past, of the future and the coming of cheonma too. and jis saw that it was a different person in the skin of the one he was fighting previously. so the change is visible even form the outsider’s perspective.

I think someone that lost an arm was UG because the arm was singular when two of BC’s arms was affected (and he didn’t actually lost them), and the losing his internal energy is about BC. It’s only my take though.

So CM’s internal injury was due to him suppressing his own complete transformation to prevent Heavenly demon from sensing his presence (CM sensed BC’s complete transformation) and triggering the HD’s ‘awakening’? Am I reading this right?

I remember asking a question similar to this some time back, and alas it’s been somewhatly answered now.

even in the Plum Blossom Saint’s era, I figure Jang Ilso would have been in top 3 strongest.

I love how this enlightenment has manifested through Chung Myung. Seems like his mind/ inner being has returned to his past glory self, but the body hasn’t. It’s like partial transformation (for lack of a better descriptive term)

I wouldn’t put JIS above Tang Bo and remember there were also bishops, archbishops and cheonma back then. Since JIS couldn’t take down a young bishop by himself in the present (in Hangzhou), I’m not sure he would’ve been that strong 100 years ago. Strong? Yes. Top 3? No way.

“what a complete mess, but it’s just perfect for now” … If you translated this line without any errors then this could potentially mean that CM of the past completely took over cho sam’s body with his past power potential meaning to cho sam internal energy being a complete mess because current CM was holding back, and this could mean that there will be a arc where the current CM have his memory blurred out with his past self is trying to reconcile and connecting to people of current mount hua… Surely he could mean this for Jang ilso too but i think it will be unlikely

i don’t think that is the troupe the author is going with.
since chapter one chung myung was himself, and his whole inner demon thing was build around acceptance, so it won’t make sense for the “current” chung myung to blur, because he has always been the current chung myung.
when he says me of the past, he is meaning the person he was, the state he was in, the level of Tao he attained etc.

When he says that, I think you have to read it with what it says before:

      Crack.

Chung Myung clenched and loosened his shattered fingers, then muttered to himself.

“What a complete mess. But… it’s just perfect for now.”

I think he means that his physical body is a mess. If he had let his body mature at the same pace as he grew his qi, then he wouldn’t have ended up with his bones fracture and so many injuries (internal and external but all physical injuries). Because his body would’ve been able to hold and exert much more energy/power/qi. But that energy/power/qi is already inside him, his body just wasn’t able to let it through, it was contained. Therefore, he was weaker than JIS and got badly injured to the point he broke all his fingers.

i interpret it as because the body is in a complete mess, it will be easier for cm to find a way to release his past powers since his body may need to be broken apart in order to manifest the transformation needed to his pbss outer body and inner power. His second life smaller body is basically a shackle that needs to be broken to release that power.

        it could be!
it can also be a familiar state to him since he was always fighting demonic cult until he had grievous wounds on his body. tang bo mentioned geomjon nearly lost his arm on the battlefield once (before the fight with cheonma)

This sentence sure did sound more like something Geomjon would say than Geomhyep, I’m glad I’m not the only one that think so. Which Demonic Possession was mentioned, I don’t think it’s what it would mean if it happened, and I think it’s more about CM is accepting all of himself more which is why he is talking more like he used to before for it’s something that can show the internal change he is going through. (maybe. Biga would know the truth, not I)

“That’s why I could never stop being a child. Because I wished for it so desperately.”

    Chung Myung sneered.

“But… it can’t last forever. Eventually, tomorrow comes. Even if completing myself means calling forth ‘him,’ I cannot keep myself locked away forever.”

I know its sad but it is also so cute?? 🥺 He could’ve done it all this time but he wanted to spend time idly w hyunhwasan 😭😭 bc calling cma forth means terrible for everyone, ugh, is that why cm didnt get enlightenment back in haenam 🤔

The warrior fights to Protect or kill ?

Past his limits but nigh his will !!

Bonds so strong, the hatred deep

Chaos dooms descendants, the ancestors failed to keep.

As steeled be thy nerves, does the warrior dare

When the past looks down, to return the stare

When the demon attacks, and doom descends

Will you shed thy snow, and rise to defend?

If Chung Myung lost, everyone lost. If he gave up, everything ended. If he turned away, someone died.

He took all these burdens as a matter of course. He had to. There had been no other choice. And so, it was alright. He could endure it.

    that hurts

I just reread the chapter and made me think. Did the person Chung Myung hated the most was his former self? Did the Dalai Lama warned him about not killing/renounce his past self?

i think after all the chapters it was quite obvious it was jang ilso. because he was talking not once how he will kill him and it’s his role, how he will kill him physically etc. it wasn’t rly that metaphorical

Yes and no I think. Jang Ilso does represent CM’s past self in many ways, so to accept himself before killing JI is probably a good thing, but I don’t think it means CM will manage to escape DL’s warning, because it seems it can build up to something ever more meaningful later, and the sentence DL’s gave to CM still has to play its role, which I don’t think will happen soon. Maybe a clue to another enlightenment in the future? Or simply words of comfort from someone that can understand his situation better than most.

Reading this theory, I would think that by killing JIS he would be “killing” his past self too.

Idk if CM accepted his past self? I understood it as CM accepted fate in general… He accepted that by allowing the enlightenment to go through (aka, getting his past self’s power back), Cheonma will definitely wake too. He accepted: getting his old power back, the future and his fate of facing Cheonma again.

I think he actually rejects his past self? That’s why he says “How empty”… Imo, we will see a different Geomjon, not the one from 100 years ago. Probably when Baek Cheon reaches them, his words will put the “cherry to the cake” (to CM’s transformation process)

I now believe Chung Myung defeated his inner demon when he accepted himself And I can’t deny that I was moved by the phrase “He was never allowed to give up.” CM bears all the burdens، Also Jang Il Soo is trembling with fear? Now he’s doomed to lose but I still expect a scenario where the Heavenly Executioner intervenes.

I had to digest this chapter for a few hours before making a comment… Another great chapter (we’re finally out of the slump!)… Now I fear a hiatus on Monday but oh well, it would be a deserved hiatus, since so many good chapters have been delivered to us lately.

I cannot wait to say “Welcome back, Maehwa Geomjon!”

I wonder if everyone’s going to notice his new aura. I absolutely love seeing JIS “unconsciously take a step back” (人*´∀`)。*゚+

I didn’t understand this: “So, when the depth of enlightenment isn’t enough, the changes that have been held back all burst forth at once in the moment of awakening. Is that the true nature of transformation and rebirth?”

I would think that when the depth of enlightenment IS enough, that’s when the changes happen? I’m missing something there.

“I’ll let you see it with your own eyes. The world of a hundred years ago.”

hmmmmm, does he mean that he will show him who Maehwa Geomjon is? Orrrr… does he mean that he now expects Cheonma to awaken as soon as Geomjon does? So JIS will experience both, Maehwa Geomjon and Cheonma’s auras: the world of a 100 years ago, destruction, chaos, death like he has never known.

This was such a wonderful chapter, there’s so much to talk about… ty Ellie for the translation!! 💓

“He accepted that by allowing the enlightenment to go through (aka, getting his past self’s power back), Cheonma will definitely wake too.”
To me, it wasn’t about Cheonma, because CM knows from DL that Cheonma is already back, so there is no reason for him to think that drawing in his past-self power would bring back Cheonma, no?

And sure, from what we saw from Cheonma’s pov, he doesn’t seem to have fully awaken, but CM didn’t have a convenient Cheonma’s pov to know it, so there is no reason to think his own power-up would affect Cheonma. Especially considering that in true CM woke up years ago, and it doesn’t seem like it affected Cheonma back then, did it?

It’s my own thoughts only of course. I personally feel that Cheonja-ma and CM are much less linked than a lot of the fandom says, but maybe I’m wrong. (it’s still nice to talk about it though! ^^)

hmm i have rephrased that sentence, i hope now it’s more understandable:

So, the moment one gains enlightenment, the transformation that had been held back due to insufficient realization bursts forth all at once.

that would be very typical of biga, have CM dominate Jang Ilso, then heavenly executioner saves him for no particular reason (given his only interest is in heavenly demon, and it seemed like Jang Ilso was ruled out as a candidate for heavenly demon’s reincarnated host)

That’s why I could never stop being a child. Because I wished for it so desperately.”

Chung Myung has always been looking for attention, this has been ingrained in him since his childhood. He was lonely. Maybe he longed to the past, but in fact, his past in Hwasan was not that great. He was dark and empty. He was reprimanded, imprisoned, and punished, which made his personality bad. He raised problems to draw attention to him after he grew up. He was bound by the restrictions of the burden. The sect that didn’t leave him. He wanted a comfortable life, and it wasn’t given to him, but even that distorted life was taken away from him.

Maybe Chung Myung tried to regain that distorted life, even for a second, but he was getting the attention that someone who had brothers behind him to trust instead of standing alone He found all this in the future Hosan That’s why he always wanted to run away and close the doors. He got what he wanted, but he was afraid that he would be robbed of him. This was more terrifying than living the past again.
Chung Myung has always been a child, but he revived himself in the aura of old age to hide himself, now he has found an opportunity to be a spoiled brother and a spoiled son of someone who does.
