Chapter 1882

You can do it. (2)

ROTMHS Glossary || About page

The sky was blue. Even the clouds had cleared away, a pure blue sky.

Having gazed for a long while at this unusually clear, high morning sky, Jang Ilso suddenly realized it had been ages since he had last seen such a sight.

Nothing obstructed his view. Only the sky filled his entire vision. It felt as if it could stretch on without end.

After gazing silently at the dazzling spectacle for a while, Jang Ilso finally opened his mouth.

“…..I see.”

His voice, though drained of strength, somehow sounded a little more at ease.

“So I… lost, did I?”

It wasn’t his first defeat.

A life that could not be called long, yet not short either. That life was filled with countless victories and defeats. At times he won, at times he lost. And at the end of it all, he had arrived here.

But Jang Ilso had never lost at the moments when he absolutely had to win. In that sense, this moment was the first ‘defeat’ he had ever faced in all his life.

Chung Myung answered in a flat, dry voice.

“…Who knows.”

Thud.

As if he could no longer hold out, Chung Myung finally slumped down as well. It was a raw, unrefined act, stripped of even the slightest dignity.

Staring blankly at his legs, now robbed of strength, Chung Myung let out a faint chuckle. No matter how he looked at it, his appearance must have been pathetic.

It truly had been a difference as thin as a sheet of paper. Perhaps it would have made more sense if Chung Myung, rather than Jang Ilso, had been lying there now.

“Well, I can’t exactly say I look like a winner either.”

“…Huk.”

Jang Ilso let out a quiet laugh. Hearing those words from Chung Myung, it finally felt real – the fact that he had lost.

Surprisingly, it was not particularly painful. He clearly knew that everything he had ever desired had crumbled in this moment, but somehow it no longer seemed to matter at all.

Instead of the emptiness he thought he would inevitably feel, only a question remained.

“Why?”

Jang Ilso asked without even turning his gaze. His pale eyes were only looking up at the distant sky.

“Why did I lose? There shouldn’t have been a single reason for me to lose.”

Chung Myung gazed vacantly at Jang Ilso.

There was neither resentment nor anger on Jang Ilso’s face. Perhaps that was why Chung Myung opened his mouth so easily.

“Because there’s nothing.”

“…”

“Because behind what you’re trying to achieve, there’s nothing. So for you, this is the final destination.”

“Final…. destination?”

Only then did Jang Ilso tilt his head slightly and turned his gaze to Chung Myung. His eyes were filled with incomprehension.

Chung Myung nodded as if he understood and continued to explain.

“I have never really wanted to bring you down. I only wanted the world that would come after bringing you down.”

Jang Ilso simply listened to Chung Myung’s words with an ambiguous expression.

“If I could have that world, whether I won or lost against you didn’t matter. But that wasn’t the case for you. You didn’t yearn for the world after this fight. All you ever wanted was the fight itself.”

“…”

“In a different sense from mine, it didn’t matter to you whether you won or lost. Not once you had reached this point.”

Chung Myung smiled weakly.

“In the end… it was never really your concern.”

Jang Ilso, quietly observing Chung Myung with half-opened eyes as if contemplating him, shifted his gaze back to the sky. Then, he murmured as though releasing a long-held sigh.

“The world after that…….”

Was that really true? Had there truly been nothing behind it all for him? Thinking it over, Jang Ilso smiled bitterly.

“No. I think there was.”

“…”

“Surely there was.”

“Yes. Probably.”

Ambiguous as the words were, Chung Myung slowly nodded, as if he understood, and as if he acknowledged it.

Jang Ilso had nothing. No world beyond this. But there was someone for whom such a world certainly existed. Someone who used to speak of that world.

‘Gemyeong-ah……’

Calling out that name silently, Jang Ilso chuckled quietly.

It wasn’t that it had never existed from the start. He had cast it aside with his own hands. To seize not what comes next, but the present. He lost what he should never have lost. He discarded what he should never have discarded.

Jang Ilso called that a ‘resolute decision.’ But Chung Myung called it Jang Ilso’s ‘fatal mistake.’

Who was right? He couldn’t tell.

Yet, there was one thing he knew clearly.

If Ho Gamyeong were by his side now. Even if only the corpse were next to him. Wouldn’t he at least have laughed, saying how fitting this all was? Wouldn’t he laugh to the fullest at the death he would soon meet and the end of all this?

Jang Ilso chuckled weakly.

“That’s really… strange, isn’t it.”

“…”

“Nothing has changed. I’m still myself. Yet… without Gamyeong, it feels as though I’m no longer truly myself.”

Chung Myung looked towards the place where Jang Ilso’s gaze had reached. The sky. Perhaps, for the first time, they were looking at the same thing.

“It’s not strange.”

“…Huh?”

“It’s not me who makes me who I am. Well, it sounds odd, but…”

“…No.”

Jang Ilso agreed with Chung Myung’s words.

“I think I understand. Those strange words.”

Chung Myung stared vacantly at the composed figure of Jang Ilso. Soon afterward, he silently turned his head away.

A brief silence drifted between them.

Two people who could understand, and yet had long since drifted too far apart to truly do so, were only now, belatedly, grasping the meaning contained in each other’s words.

At the end of that silence, Jang Ilso let out a little snicker and opened his mouth.

“We’re not exactly the sort to get so sentimental, are we?”

At some point, Jang Ilso had returned to gazing at Chung Myung with his uniquely sly smile.

Even though he had been defeated, even though he no longer had the strength to be a threat to anyone, he was still Jang Ilso. With that smile, Jang Ilso was proving himself.

Chung Myung felt a question rise. Why was it, he wondered, that those eyes felt so familiar? To him, Jang Ilso was someone who should have remained a stranger, always beyond his reach.

“The game ends here.”

Depending on how one hears it, it could sound as though he meant to take Chung Myung’s life, but in truth, the real meaning was that it was time to take his own.

“You know. This isn’t child’s play.”

Of course, Chung Myung knew that well.

That’s what war is. Once lives have been exchanged, it cannot end with just a few words. No one can accept such a conclusion. Chung Myung was no exception.

“Unless…….”

Crack.

Jang Ilso slowly moved his hand.

No, it wasn’t just his hand. In an instant, his body rose like a ghost. Then, with a distorted smile, he faced Chung Myung.

“You didn’t think I’d let go of everything, did you?”

Chung Myung let out a small, dry laugh.

“As if.”

Right. That’s the kind of people they both were.

So long as they moved, they could not stop. They didn’t know how to stop on their own. And so, there was no choice but to cut it off.

Shrrrring.

Chung Myung unfastened the sheath from his waist and drew his sword.

Thunk.

Having lost its blade, the empty sheath fell to the ground.

Having lost its sheath, the sword could do nothing but cut. For it has no place to rest, no place to return to.

Using the sword as a prop, Chung Myung forced himself up, wrenching his uncooperative body upright with grim determination.

He stepped forward, stubbornly, towards Jang Ilso, who stood there waiting for him.

Strangely, his steps felt heavy. Or perhaps that was only natural?

Well, he wasn’t sure.

He couldn’t tell if it was his physical burden, the heaviness of his heart, or perhaps something else unknown to him, pressing down upon him.

He knew only that every step he took towards Jang Ilso, each step meant to sever his head, was unbearably arduous.

It was someone who deserved to be called an enemy. No – perhaps a word he did not even wish to put to his lips… an archenemy might have been more fitting. Such a man, and yet – could it have been possible he had come to deeply understand someone like Jang Ilso?

But even if that were true, it could never be the answer.

Because understanding something with your mind didn’t necessarily mean sympathizing with your heart. And understanding did not necessarily mean feeling a sense of kinship.

Chung Myung knew it too. That perhaps Jang Ilso might have been another version of himself. Had Chung Myung lost Hwasan, he might have turned into a devil far worse than Jang Ilso.

Yet, even knowing this, he could never forgive Jang Ilso. Not ever, no matter what.

But if so… why did these few steps towards him felt so burdensome and so distant?

Step.

At last, forcing himself forward, Chung Myung stared straight at Jang Ilso.

Jang Ilso simply waited quietly. Gone was the unique mischievous expression, and mockery that had once filled his eyes faded.

It was strange. Once he set down all the things that made Jang Ilso ‘Jang Ilso,’ he looked oddly peaceful. Like a man shrugging off clothes that didn’t fit.

One step.

The distance was now enough for his sword to reach. Chung Myung stopped there and stared blankly at Jang Ilso.

It didn’t suit him. That expression, the vast sky stretching wide behind him. And…

Crack.

He tightened his grip on the sword. The Dark Fragrance Plum Blossom Sword. A sword symbolizing the friendship between the Tang Clan and Hwasan, between Tang Gunak and Chung Myung.

The blade trembled faintly. It shook as if convulsing, as if crying out, yet refused to move forward.

Chung Myung bit his bloodless lips. However desperately he tried, the sword stayed still and would not obey his will. In confusion, Chung Myung opened his mouth.

“I……”

He didn’t know what he wanted to say, or what he even wanted to do. Everything seemed so mixed up that it felt empty, like a lone boat adrift on a boundless sea, pushed and tossed without direction.

Jang Ilso watched such a Chung Myung with eyes sunk deep.

“…how weak.”

Then, slowly, Jang Ilso raised his hand. A painfully blue light gathered around his slender, pale fingers.

Blue flame bloomed like a tattered flower.

“I told you. The one who hesitates…… will lose.”

Chung Myung stared blankly at the blue flame igniting at Jang Ilso’s fingertips, fully expecting it would soon pierce his heart.

He couldn’t comprehend what he was feeling at this moment.

Suddenly, Jang Ilso’s previously calm eyes flared intensely.

Then, Chung Myung saw it.

A figure clad in white, rushing fiercely towards them, cutting through the pack of Red Dogs, who filled the space behind Jang Ilso.

As Chung Myung looked at him, Jang Ilso’s gaze also shifted in that direction.

“Chuuuuuung Myuuuuuung-aaaaaah!”

He – Baek Cheon – was running towards them, shouting as if in anguish.

In that instant, a chilling sense of peril pierced through Chung Myung. The corners of Jang Ilso’s mouth rose, twisted high.

Chung Myung’s eyes briefly met Jang Ilso’s gaze, and then Jang Ilso turned completely around, facing away from Chung Myung.

“Enough…….”

“Stooooop!”

Baek Cheon roared. As his sword shone red, Jang Ilso’s blue flame swelled and raged in an even deeper blue.

Two colors that seemed destined never to mix collided in front of Chung Myung’s eyes, each desperately crushing the other.

Fwooooooosh!

The world was enveloped in flames. At least, that’s how it appeared to Chung Myung. Flame as cold as the deep of dawn was tearing at Baek Cheon’s flesh.

Thuuuk!

Flicker.

The overwhelming deep blue that had consumed everything vanished instantly, washed away without a trace. In its place emerged a gentle sky-blue light.

Chung Myung stared blankly at his sword. Blood trickled in droplets along the white blade. His sword was plunged deep into Jang Ilso’s back.

The sensation of cold metal piercing a still-warm heart burned itself indelibly onto Chung Myung’s fingertips.

Baek Cheon, who had been rushing forward, froze in place.

Perhaps everything had suddenly stopped without anyone noticing. Baek Cheon, Chung Myung – even the world itself.

And so, the only thing Chung Myung could see was Jang Ilso’s back.

Why? Why…

Strength drained quickly from Chung Myung’s body. His powerless body slumped. It seemed his shoulder would come to rest against Jang Ilso’s.

Yet their shoulders never touched. The cold sword remained firmly wedged between them.

At that moment, something touched Chung Myung’s head.

Tap.

What could it be? Jang Ilso was clearly facing away. No – he didn’t want to know. Perhaps now it no longer mattered at all.

A quiet voice reached his ears.

“Look at this.”

“…”

“You can do it.”

Strangely, that voice was nothing but gentle.

Jang Ilso slowly raised his head. It seemed as though he was looking at the sky – but perhaps, he saw something else entirely.

“Even so, it was rather… enjoyable.”

Jang Ilso’s body slowly crumbled. Without realizing it, Chung Myung reached out and grabbed the hem of his clothes.

Riiiip.

But Jang Ilso’s worn-out garments tore all too easily, slipping through Chung Myung’s fingers as his body collapsed to the ground.

Thud.

Like someone in a trance, Chung Myung stared at Jang Ilso, now lying there.

That profile, that face drained of color. Those lips, faded to pale blue.

Yet, Chung Myung saw nothing clearly. He was staring right at him, but he saw nothing at all. What sort of expression was Jang Ilso making?

Only…

“Chung… Myung-ah.”

Baek Cheon hurriedly approached, grabbing Chung Myung’s shoulder. His firm, solid grip felt like he was desperately trying to hold onto someone drifting away.

“Are you…… all right?”

Chung Myung could not understand this question. Nor could he understand why Baek Cheon wore such an expression.

Chung Myung’s gaze drifted somewhere distant – towards the wide-open blue sky, and to something far beyond it.

“…..I’m fine.”

His fingertips were cold.

“I’m fine, Sasuk. It’s nothing at all.”

Baek Cheon tightened his grip on Chung Myung’s shoulder even more, as if desperately trying to hold onto a handful of slipping sand.

“All right.”

“…”

“Leave it to me now.”

Chung Myung smiled faintly.

Strangely, at least at this moment, he found himself envying Baek Cheon’s stubborn, unwavering resolve.

The sword slipped from Chung Myung’s grasp.

Thud.

The moment the sword touched the ground, Chung Myung’s body collapsed with it. Baek Cheon quickly supported him, putting Chung Myung’s arm around his own neck, holding him tightly so he wouldn’t fall after exhausting all his strength.

With his lips pressed tight as if barely holding something back, Baek Cheon spoke in a voice tinged with inexplicable emotion*.

“…You did well. You damned brat.”

A faint smile tugged at Chung Myung’s slackened lips.

‘Right?’

Within a vision gone black, he could faintly see the figure of one person smiling brightly.

‘Sahyeong.’

Within that vision, Chung Mun smiled at him brightly, brighter than ever.

*In Korean it’s normal to say a “voice tinged with wetness” – implying it’s sadness/sorrow/holding back tears etc. But in English it just sounds weird. Adding this for context of Baek Cheon’s emotions.

WOOOO HOOOOO!!! It should be a worldwide holiday… HOW LONG HAS HE BEEN SURVIVING. OMG… omg guys im so happy. my hands were literally shaking for 15 minutes after first reading the chapter.

But at the same time this is so sad. Jang Ilso purposely aiming for Baek Cheon to help Chung Myung finish him off… im still processing this.

If JI is a reincarnation of someone CM knows, then it is probably Chung Mun as that would make the biggest impact for CM. But I am not sure how would CM knows about this later? and why did CM and BC have premonition?

Im honestly surprised Biga actually killed Jang Ilso. There were sooooo many instances were the author seemed to foreshadow Jang Ilso surviving. Around the middle of the chapter I was almost certain that BC would have saved Jang Ilso for whatever reason the author could’ve come up with. Also, how many chapters ago were we betting the amount of chapters until JI would be killed? (It was on a hiatus announcement).

It was quite a poetic and melancholic end, honestly. And just as we thought, the fact that JIS cast aside HGM while Chung Myung still had Baek Cheon made a crucial difference. I really thought BC would kill JIS in the end, but this ending is both surprising yet fitting.

The reference to Tang Gunak also proved that JIS could not be spared no matter what, and it’s interesting that he was more aware of that than CM. In a way, CM is quite a softie…

As for a voice “filled with wetness” (lol), maybe “choked with emotion” would be a better English translation?

Thanks for the chapter, Ellie! Hopefully now all of us and CM can move on from JIL lol

Go now, go O children of the humble, broken land.

Knock on the doors with tiny hand,

Rouse the dreamers from their night,

And cry aloud with all your might:

Evil has fallen– its reign undone,

The blade has triumphed, and the war is won!

    JANG ILSO IS GONE!!

This should be an international holiday from now on, oh I’m so happy I’m sick😫 so much emotions happened this chapter I need time to process them all😭 I’m glad Biga didn’t milk him any longer, it was a good end– a very JIS ending.

The war against JIS may have ended for now, but a bigger enemy is awaiting for them. The next arcs must be crazy.

Well, well, what an intense chapter. Without a doubt, I can’t consider Jang Ilso and Chung Myung as enemies, despite everything. They’re more like rivals who helped each other find what they were searching for.

What a bitter feeling… Ilso definitely marked a before and after in that world—a world that, after losing Gamyeong, stopped making sense, which is why he took his own life.

I’d like to think they defeated him, but ever since he arrived at the field, he just played with the children. He waited for Chung Myung, and they exchanged swords and words. Even though he said he was going all out and was afraid of dying… wasn’t this the ending he wanted? In the end, Jang Ilso died—but he was the one who won.

Ah, what a great character Jang Ilso is. One of my favorites in terms of writing so far. Now that his time on the stage has come to an end, I wonder what characters Biga will bring next.

Thank you for the chapter, Ellie.

i don’t think he won. in the end he acknowledged that the path cm was walking on was the right one. if he didn’t acknowledge that, he wouldn’t have let cm kill him in this last scene… he achieved his goal of having this fight, but it was a wrong goal to begin with. as jis was compared to geomjon so much, geomjon also “won,” but he also lost everything. so here jis definitely lost.

Baekcheon! I love you too, but honestly I love Jang Ilso too.

What a waste of an awesome villain. (Not really that wasteful, but, honestly, personally, I wanted for him to live.)

Chung Myung killed defenseless Jang Ilso because he is afraid he will kill you, BAEKCHEONNN.

Baekcheon is worrying that Chung Myung will regret something if he is not there, but I think this is what CM will regret a bit.

    Stabbed his back! Too dead!

Chung Myung was hesitating so much!

    Aaaaaaaaaaa 😭🫨

Jang Ilso told him he can kill him! aaaaaaa, dead romance 🥹🥲.

Tsk (I was looking forward to a redeemed villain arc, but now he’s dead²), unless he becomes Cheonma’s zombie friend lol.

The prophecy/premonition/warning (I don’t know what it’s called 😅) of Dalai Lama came true. CM is still the one who killed JIS. I wonder how it will affect CM as he did not intend for it to happen like that… A wound at the back of a warrior. Maybe JIS wants it that way to happen, to not have an honorable death, but sadly it weighs heavily on CM. Thank you Ellie for the translations. Maybe next we’ll see the repercussions of JIS death.

First of all, thank you Ellie for your effort for this remarkable chapter ❤
I have to do a little of the analysis bc it’s JIS death, and also bc of all the talking in this chapter. It’ll be a long comment.

For JIS, he finnally got some enlightment from CM of what’s really important and that he should not have cast it away. (Ho Gamyeong say hi after dead again)

Can I see this as a inner child of who he is? He’s wear all those fancy things on him and even make up to seal and hide himself. It describe he’s a child infront of CM, a child trying to act all grown up or sth like that.

[He didn’t know what he wanted to say, or what he even wanted to do. Everything seemed so mixed up that it felt empty, like a lone boat adrift on a boundless sea, pushed and tossed without direction.]

It feels like CM meet someone who truly understand him and yet still different from himself, someone to talk with, of how they see the world and people in it but then JIS die – like a child have to say goodbye to a friend but not friend but still know each other very well. This kind of chemical relationship… And again, the ‘boat’ thing, still not get the grip of it yet.

[Then, slowly, Jang Ilso raised his hand. A painfully blue light gathered around his slender, pale fingers.

Chung Myung stared blankly at the blue flame igniting at Jang Ilso’s fingertips, fully expecting it would soon pierce his heart.]

CM can’t kill JIS so he’s gonna letting him kill him back(???) TT^TT

[In that instant, a chilling sense of peril pierced through Chung Myung. The corners of Jang Ilso’s mouth rose, twisted high.
Chung Myung’s eyes briefly met Jang Ilso’s gaze, and then Jang Ilso turned completely around, facing away from Chung Myung.

The world was enveloped in flames. At least, that’s how it appeared to Chung Myung. Flame as cold as the deep of dawn was tearing at Baek Cheon’s flesh.]

So JIS purposely making a fake attempt to kill BC bc whenever sth related to Hwasan, to what CM dear love being threat, he will instinctly kill them to protect them. At first I thought that JIS backward his step to get stab as a play for CM heroic scene.

[At that moment, something touched Chung Myung’s head.

    Tap.

What could it be? Jang Ilso was clearly facing away. No – he didn’t want to know. Perhaps now it no longer mattered at all.

A quiet voice reached his ears.

    “Look at this.”

    “…”

    “You can do it.”

Strangely, that voice was nothing but gentle.]

‘You can do it’, didn’t expect this emotional title was JIS words.

[That profile, that face drained of color. Those lips, faded to pale blue.]

Okay from red lips we got pale blue, confirm he’s dead.

[Baek Cheon hurriedly approached, grabbing Chung Myung’s shoulder. His firm, solid grip felt like he was desperately trying to hold onto someone drifting away.

Chung Myung’s gaze drifted somewhere distant – towards the wide-open blue sky, and to something far beyond it.

    “…..I’m fine.”

    His fingertips were cold.

“I’m fine, Sasuk. It’s nothing at all.”

Baek Cheon tightened his grip on Chung Myung’s shoulder even more, as if desperately trying to hold onto a handful of slipping sand.]

PLSSSSSSS tell me that BC really get a whole grip on CM and that CM will be okay now. I’m still not sure with the lantern and the boat thing.

[“…You did well. You damned brat.”

A faint smile tugged at Chung Myung’s slackened lips.

    ‘Right?’

Within a vision gone black, he could faintly see the figure of one person smiling brightly.

    ‘Sahyeong.’

Within that vision, Chung Mun smiled at him brightly, brighter than ever.]

Appreciate this moment people, I’m sobbing again bc of this stupid sajae.

When I was reading the chapter, I kept thinking, “Come on, he’s not gonna die. The author wants him alive.” I was a bit annoyed—but surprise… he actually died.Seriously? … Huh? Finally!!He kept winning so much it made me sick just seeing his name.He was an annoying villain—but kinda awesome. Smart, yeah, but dumb enough to miss what really mattered in his life… never even looked at it.Well, now they’ll meet in hell~~Ellie, how about dying on a Friday?

Biga literally cooked while writing such character Ilso. What the hell is this? After all this time, all those thing he did, I found myself sad at his death?! Really. The entire fandom may be feeling similar as CM. And BC overlapping Chung Mun again! Biga may take a month of Hiatus if he/she makes such chapters! Absolutely loved it! Jang Ilso realised everything he did was worthless because Ho Gameyong wasn’tn’t here! Holy crap!

I’m not so sure what I feel about this chapter haha 😅 I’m truly, truly glad this part of the story is over but since I have zero empathy for Jang Ilso I can’t understand Chung Myung’s attachment towards him. It’s like this chaoter was written for us to feel sad about JIS’s death but instead it weirded me out.

It also seems to me like Chung Myung developed this weird attachment to JIS during this fight… or maybe I just misunderstood their dynamic in the past and this is the natural conclusion of it?

Idk, something feels off to me. I can easily imagine the author re-writing this multiple times hahaha

By the end of the chapter though, I find myself slightly confused about everything that happened lol. And JIS’s “sacrifice”didn’t evoke any emotions from me. At the end, JIS may have begun to understand Chung Myung’s point of view but he never felt any remorse for all the massacre he’s done.

The only thing I can come up with for CM’s feelings is that even though that that person killed his dear friend, he realized that he’s just tired of killing, even if it is JIS. So while JIS (and the old CM) never showed any remorse, CM is starting to feel it really deep. He just wants that peaceful world, not more killing.

Btw, what was that of Chung Myung feeling someone over his head? Was that supposed to be JIS or what?

Ty for the chapter Ellie! 💕💕

i will answer your comment with a compilation of thoughts from my long ahh conversation with my friend about this chapter. cause my pov in this chapter seems to be drastically different from yours. i think it was beautiful and emotional and im still not over this.

first of all, chung myung didn’t develop attachment to jis in this fight. they immediately clocked each other since the moment they have met. jis found cm fascinating, and cm found jis cunning and dangerous. they both always acknowledged each other, they both came to understand each other to a degree. remember how astonished ho gamyeong was, when jis was trusting cm more than himself, saying he just won’t fight on a battlefield where cm is present. and how cm trusted in what jis will do (in many instances from predicting his behavior to agreeing to deals and conditions jis proposed to him). just remember the great and magnificent hangzhou arc. the synergy between cm and jis is still unmatched in this novel (five swords don’t even come close even having spent sm time with cm), cm literally got tang bo flashbacks from it (i still remember how jis pushed cm in his back and cm allowed him to do it in the fight, totally relying on jis’s protection). in this chapter jis throws away his mask and cm sees him just as jang ilso, not “paegun jang ilso.”

in this chapter it was the first time jang ilso actually listened to chung myung. he actually tried to understand him, and not only push his agenda. he genuinely asked “why?” and received his answer. not only did he receive the answer he also reflected on it and understood what he has done wrong and why did he lose. jis admitted his defeat, he called it his first “real” defeat and he held up to this decision until the end. he still saw kindness as weakness, he calls chung myung “weak..” and aims for baek cheon, knowing chung myung would never let anyone hurt hwasan. jang ilso, while acknowledging his defeat, helps cm kill him, because he saw how that “weakness” (kindness and softness in cm) made cm who he is, made the path he is walking the right and worthwhile one.

      read this carefully:
“Strength drained quickly from Chung Myung’s body. His powerless body slumped. It seemed his shoulder would come to rest against Jang Ilso’s.
Yet their shoulders never touched. The cold sword remained firmly wedged between them.”
the double meaning in this paragraph is beautiful. they had always been the two sides of the same coin, hence they could never “touch,” their paths couldn’t cross, but they were so much alike and different it was impossible to not to be drawn to each other. the cold sword wedged between them – a symbol of what has happened between them and the pain (mostly jis) inflicted on chung myung and the impossibility of forgiveness in this situation, even if they understood each other in the end. but still. they nearly leaned on each other, but even death didn’t allow it for them. there are so many “what if”
      in their relationship.

the way chung myung stabbed jis. he didn’t even see how he did it. he didn’t do it consciously. he was put in front of a fact – that he has already stabbed him. cm was shocked, just as we were. in this moment im pretty sure he understood what jis did and why. a complete defeat? for one or for both of them? it’s even hard to tell who won and who lost. jang ilso gives cm a had pat. in a twisted way jis yearned for this bond, his whole purpose was to have this standoff with cm. he was the first human he had probably seen a person. and he wants cm to succeed. “you can do it.” – tears literally sprayed out of my eyes when i saw this. and cm was stunned. no matter what jis did, we can’t deny what they were – parallel lines? two sides of the same coin? just how many similarities cm seen in jis? how many of his past regrets he recognized in him? imagine cm’s expression, imagine his face when he tries to grab his falling nemesis, the swirling emotions inside, the relief and the sadness at the same time. it almost felt as if he didn’t want to lose jis. cause cm’s purpose was the world, the peace that comes without sapaeryon, not the fall of jis himself, as he said. “what if” i lost hwasan and became a devil worse than jis. “what if” jis didn’t end up in the evil sects, and was cm’s ally instead?..

the emptiness and sadness that ironically comes after losing your worst enemy. the loneliness cm always feels, his yearning for his past hwasan and his yearning for being understood in this life. it is sad and it is devastating to see someone so similar to you and having so much potential going the wrong way and having to kill him with your own hands for the pain he had inflicted on you. it’s hard, it’s sad. it’s depressing. standing applause for biga.

The way CM see the world -his heart in a way- finally reached JI, but it was just before JI was to die. In a way it is good, I think it’s thanks to this that JI could die peacefully (I’m sure the expression that CM cannot see is a peaceful one, and it’s why he can’t see it). But it also means that CM felt closer to him than ever, and to feel this way when he has to kill him… In the end, even though BC could reach CM, I really don’t think it stopped what Dalai Lama saw in CM from happening.

I wonder if, which CM saw CMun when his world became black, when Jang Ilso lose his vision, it’s Ho Gamyeong that he saw. I don’t know if there is a world after death in this story, but whether there is or not, now the same thing happened to JI than what happened to HGM, so they both are in the “same place”, whether this place truly exist or it’s just going back to nothing. They both died by the same blade, and they both seemed to be fine with the blade that took their life. So it’s relieving in a way. I’m a bit happy for them, that they had such last moments. Too bad Cheongmyeong is the one that has to pay the price for it, the weight of their live heavier than possibly any other live he took before, especially so for Jang Ilso.

Thank you for the translation Ellie, this chapter is a true masterpiece. I hope you have a great day!🫶🫶🫶

“At some point, Jang Ilso had returned to gazing at Chung Myung with his uniquely sly smile.
Even though he had been defeated, even though he no longer had the strength to be a threat to anyone, he was still Jang Ilso. With that smile, Jang Ilso was proving himself.”

I didn’t notice it before, but which rereading this part made me wonder, it’s the smile HGM told JI to smile to appear like if he already owned everything in the world, isn’t it?
And JI is proving he is still himself because even if the person that makes him who he is isn’t alive anymore, he still exists in him, like CMun and CJin and TB still exist in CM.
It’s how I see it at least. Does it make sense to anyone else?

honestly…. this chapter was too shocking. ran here to read it immediately after a post I saw on tiktok and now I’m regretting it. in a good way.

in my opinion tho, it’s a bit endearing to see how JI realized that victory without gakmyung was worthless, and the way he encouraged CM…. really I’m positive that there would have been room for serious character development but then I don’t think he would have been forgiven by the others anyways.

greatest regret: not seeing JI and CM fight the heavenly demon together.

Best: noting that JI and gakmyung died together. seriously, its comforting in an odd way. (not the fact that they died but the fact that well… they can be buddies again? don’t know how to put it. (this is the part where you listen to ‘just the two of us’, it really fits the occasion)

anyways thx for the amazing translationn

This is how Baijon jang Ilsu ended, he was tragic, but it must be no matter what happened, he is one of the best characters I have read about him, I wished he would extend and stay longer, but in the end he was despairing of his position.

There’s so much to say about him, a lot of mixed feelings. When I started reading about him, I knew I was going to be sad when he was done. His presence was fun.

But until the end it was wonderful even if other characters appeared later this novel was for Jang Ilsu

Actually I don’t hate Jang Il Soo completely he’s just annoying but still one of my favorite characters who even though he always took screen time along with that disgusting old bald guy from Chung Myung he was a quality villain in terms of writing and of course not cheesy compared to him I hate all the characters with Chung Myung at first I was okay with it as they would often make fun of Chung Myung and it was okay but now it’s unbearable as their conscious and subconscious actions keep hurting Chung Myung always and since Chung Myung never complained it’s taken for granted.

To put it another way, it’s like Jang Il Soo who was far away and Chung Myung’s arch enemy understood Chung Myung more than them while his “comrades” and the children he worked hard on and carried didn’t even once try to have a good conversation with him and say they don’t understand him while complaining about his personality all the time but Chung Myung’s personality is the nicest of them all he just didn’t find anyone who understands him of course only now it seems that Baek Chun has finally woken up from his slumber but unfortunately it’s too late Chung Myung’s mental and physical traumas have increased throughout this novel and he hasn’t found anyone to console him or ease his pain and now Tang Junak the only person who could sense that Chung Myung was falling apart is gone too.
